West Sumatra is famous for its culinary delights, such as rendang or dendeng balado, but that’s not all. Blessed with enchantingly beautiful nature, West Sumatra, a.k.a. the Land of Minangkabau, is also full of stunning nature destinations, including Puncak Lawang in Agam District.
Puncak Lawang is a must-visit destination when you are traveling to West Sumatra. At an altitude of 1,210 meters above sea level, this destination presents you with a beautiful view of green forests alongside dazzling Lake Maninjau, stretching as far as the eye can see.
Located in the highlands, Puncak Lawang has typically cool air of a mountainous region. According to the BMKG website, its average temperature ranges from 17 °C to 20 °C. For those of you acclimated to a tropical climate, you will find this temperature comfortable even during the day while watching fun paragliding activities.
While Puncak Lawang became famous only recently, tourism has actually existed here since the Dutch colonial era. It is said that Dutch officials and their wives used Puncak Lawang as a destination for rest and relaxation. Back then, Puncak Lawang was called “Rumah Bola” (lit. House of Ball).
When you take a trip to Puncak Lawang, there are many attractions and activities that you don’t want to miss out on. Curious? Here are some of them.
Puncak Lawang is full of natural photo spots for tourists as it is surrounded by pine forests facing Lake Maninjau. You can use this scenery as a background when taking selfies.
In Puncak Lawang, the best spot offers the scenery of Lake Maninjau, which covers an area of about 100 square kilometers. The lake is so large that the reflection of the clouds is visible on its surface.
The lush trees surrounding the lake also add to its allure. The best time to visit Lake Maninjau is during the day. In the morning or evening, some areas are covered in fog that conceals its allure. With that being said, the morning or evening scenery offers a unique experience that you can also enjoy.
Paragliding is an activity you can do while in Puncak Lawang. For a beginner, you can enjoy a tandem paragliding flight with a pilot. You can get an adrenaline rush while savoring a unique bird’s-eye view of the stunning Agam District.
If you want to do outbound activities, Puncak Lawang also provides fun and challenging outbound games, such as flying fox, rocking bridge, and rope climbing. The costs vary, but they are affordable.
Puncak Lawang is open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. While the best time to visit this tourist destination is during the day, it’s perfectly fine to come in the morning or evening and enjoy the beautiful sunrise and sunset covered in fog.
To enjoy the natural beauty of Puncak Lawang, you need to pay the entrance fee, which is also affordable. For visits on Monday-Saturday, the tickets are priced at Rp20,000, while on Sundays and public holidays, you only need to pay Rp25,000.
You can travel to Puncak Lawang on land. Located 24 kilometers from downtown Bukittinggi, this destination can be reached after an hour’s drive. From Padang, West Sumatra’s capital, the distance of about 110 kilometers can be covered in a 3-hour drive.
