You must be aware that automatic cars were designed to simplify driving for drivers. It makes the driving experience more effortless without a clutch pedal and gear shifter.
While automatic cars may seem simple to operate, many drivers still make common mistakes. If not addressed, it can result in significant technical issues over time.
Whether intentional or not, there are several recurring automatic car drivers often make. To ensure your car remains in optimal condition, it’s essential to avoid these mistakes for safety and driving comfort.
Revving the engine just before shifting gears is a common, but highly discouraged practice. If done frequently, it can lead to a bad impact on the components due to excessive friction beyond normal operating conditions.
Another common mistake is shifting the gear lever to a neutral (N) position while driving downhill roads. This can cause a reduction in oil supply.
Such a practice deprives the transmission of proper lubrication, potentially causing damage. If done too often, it can have long-term impacts and cause component wear.
The next one is abruptly pressing the gas pedal (kickdown) too often to force the automatic transmission to downshift for more responsive acceleration.
While kickdown is necessary in certain situations, excessive use can lead to increased fuel consumption and tire wear.
Another issue is resting the left foot on the brake pedal for an extended period. It may seem unusual, but some drivers do it.
To operate the brake and gas pedals, your right foot is all you need. Meanwhile, your left foot should rest on the footrest without pressing any pedals.
Shifting the gear lever to position Park (P) while the car has not completely stopped is also a common mistake. It often happens when parking in a rush and the driver may not realize that the car is still moving. When repeated, this action can break the locking pins in the gearbox.
Besides understanding the proper operation, you also need to perform regular maintenance on the automatic transmission based on the manufacturer’s guidelines to keep it in good condition.
