Do you know that seat belts actually play a crucial role in a car? Before cars were equipped with a series of today’s advanced features, it turns out that not all cars were equipped with seat belts in the ‘70s or ‘80s.
Realizing their vital function, car manufacturers around the world agreed and made seat belts a mandatory safety standard in every car, even in the cheapest one.
Although seat belts must be worn when driving, unfortunately, some people still drive recklessly and are reluctant to wear them for various reasons.
One reason you often hear is that they’re only driving short distances. As a matter of fact, no matter how far you travel, the risk of an accident is always present. So don’t take it lightly!
Even though some cars are equipped with airbags, they still can’t guarantee safety in case of an accident. So you still have to wear a seat belt to minimize the impact.
Considering the importance of using seat belts, Law No. 22 of 2009 Article 289 states that a criminal penalty of imprisonment and fines await the violators of this law.
One of the functions of a seat belt is to support the body while driving. The seat belt will hold your body upright so you can keep your focus forwardto prevent concentration loss, especially if you’re the driver.
The seat belt goes beyond that. In an accident, it can also hold the body in placeto minimize the risk of being thrown away or hit by the steering wheel.
Motorcyclists wear helmets to protect their heads, while car drivers wear seat belts. Even though it’s not used directly on the head, a seat belt can protect the body from collisions that can harm the head.
When an accident occurs and involves a collision, the body remains firmly in place, and the head is safe from hitting the steering wheel or the car window.
Sure enough, we’ll never know what can happen on the road. But, with a seat belt, the risks of injury during an accident can be reduced. A seat belt is definitely important for all the passengers in the car.
Safetyis closely related to comfort. Seat belts are designed to make drivers sit upright comfortably so they can always focus on driving. Driving a car will thus make it more enjoyable and not make you tired easily.
Always remember that the essence of every journey is arriving safely at your destination. To that end, always wear a seat belt to feel safer on the road and to prove your compliance with
Law No. 22 of 2009 Article 289which regulates the obligation to wear seat belts as follows,
"Every person who drives a motorized vehicle or a passenger sitting next to the driver who does not wear a safety belt as referred to in Article 106 paragraph (6) shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 1 (one) month or a fine of a maximum of Rp 250,000 (two hundred and fifty thousand rupiahs)".
So, it’s clear now that wearing a seat belt is crucial for safety and reduces the risk of injury in an accident.
On top of that, make sure the car and other safety features are in good condition. One of the ways to do that is by doing routine car maintenance.
