August is the month of celebration in Indonesia. Across the archipelago, communities come together to commemorate the anniversary of Indonesia's independence on August 17. The day often starts with a ceremony and is proceeded by various competitions and events, each reflecting the nation's spirit of struggle and unity.

Many regions also add a splash of local flavor, infusing their celebrations with traditional customs and practices that make the August 17 festivities truly stand out.

To enhance the independence day festivities, TRAC has compiled some highlights of these unique competitions taking place in cities across Indonesia.

Whether you're a local or a tourist eager to immerse yourself in the culture, take the opportunity to explore these events over the long weekend marking Indonesia's Independence Day, also known as HUT RI, on August 17, 2023.

5 Most Unique August 17 Competitions

Pacu Kude - Aceh

The Pacu Kude horse race in Aceh is more than just a competition of speed; it's a vibrant expression of history and philosophy. A longstanding tradition, Pacu Kude has been part of Aceh's cultural heritage since the Dutch colonial era. Locals often engage in these races after the harvest, treating them as a communal game.

After Indonesia gained independence and local governance was established, Pacu Kude gained further significance. It became an integral part of the Indonesian Independence Day celebrations, held regularly as a symbol of the people's struggle for freedom.

The best horses, guided by skilled jockeys, battle their way to victory, embodying the resilience and unity of the Acehnese people.

Traditionally, the Aceh Besar District has hosted the annual Pacu Kude event. However, it won't be held in the area in 2023, as the usual venue, HM Hasan Gayo Blang Bebangka Field, is under construction in preparation for the 2024 PON. But don't worry, Pacu Kude will return in the coming years, showcased in an even better venue.

Sailing Boat Competition - Batam, Riau Archipelago

The waters of Batam in the Riau Archipelago come alive with colorful sails each year, as part of the Sailing Boat Competition or Lomba Sampan Layar held to mark the anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

But it's not just sailboats that take center stage; ketinting and fast boat competitions add to the excitement, making this an event filled with maritime marvels.

This year, the Batam City Government has scheduled the Sailboat Contest for August 26, 2023, at Panjang Sekotok Island, Bulang District. In addition, Belakangpadang Island is also set to host a similar celebration.

If the weather permits, don't miss the chance to witness a thrilling canoe race, with the glittering skyline of Singapore serving as a stunning backdrop, on August 17.

Durian Football - Kebumen, Central Java

Football, the world's most popular sport, takes an unusual twist in Kebumen Regency during the August 17 competition. In this region, the traditional football matches are replaced with something quite unique - durian football. Yes, you read that right! In this game, the typical football is replaced with a durian, the “king” of fruit.

Durian football is played on a smaller field, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in sheer excitement. Participation is restricted to adults, and not just anyone can join.

Players must compete barefoot, so only those with certain skills and a tolerance for the prickly durian are allowed. Even if playing isn't your thing, watching this one-of-a-kind match is sure to provide an entertaining and unforgettable experience.

Jukung Rowing Competition - Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan

The Jukung, a long and narrow boat, has deep historical roots in the daily lives of the river communities in South Kalimantan.

These boats become the stars of the show during the Jukung rowing competitions, which are often held on significant occasions, including the August 17 celebrations in Banjarmasin, known as the City of a Thousand Rivers.

More than just a festive spectacle, the Jukung rowing event also serves as a breeding ground for future rowing athletes. It's a thrilling blend of tradition and talent development, encapsulating the vibrant spirit of the independence celebration.

Peresean - Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara

Peresean is a thrilling contest of agility among the pepadu, or champions, from the land of Sasak. In this traditional match, two pepadu face off, armed with rattan sticks and protected by shields made of buffalo skin. Historically, Peresean served as a training ground for Sasak youth, preparing them to defend against invaders.

This year, the Lombok Island Peresean competition kicks off on August 19, 2023, at Praya Public Square. Planned to be held for 10 days, this event will bring together athletes from all districts and cities in West Nusa Tenggara.

The 5 competitions highlighted above showcase just a glimpse of the unique and culturally rich events that take place on August 17 across Indonesia, especially considering that the country has countless of unique traditions when it comes to celebrating Independence Day.
