The 2022 year end calendar may not be the friendlies calendars of all. One factor is the lack of ‘red marked’ days or holidays that falls on weekdays. Thus, making those ‘holidays’ seem meaningless. However, you can still make the best out of your weekends by making short trips to places nearby.
If you live around the Jabodetabek area or in West Java, one of the thing that you can do to make the best out of your weekend is rafting. There are plenty rivers around that you can visit for rafting, for example, Cisadane, Palayangan, Citatih, Cikandak, Citarik, and many other rivers in Jawa Barat that you can visit and experience rafting on.
Although not as famous as some of the rivers that have been mentioned, there are also rafting destinations that you can choose, like the Cipunagara River in Subang. This option is perfect for those of you want to avoid crowded rivers. Before that, let's get acquainted with the Cipunagara River first.
Cipunagara is a river that stretches almost 150 kilometers long with an upstream located on Mount Bukit Tunggul with an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. The Cipunagara River itself flows towards the north coast of Java and empties into the Java Sea. Traversing over Subang, Sumedang, and Indramayu district, the upper reach of this river is home to a natural lake named Situ Cipabeasan.
The local community benefits from the Cipunagara River as their fish-producing resource. Besides that, the locals also utilize the large discharge of river water for agricultural irrigation. Nowadays, many tourists come to Cipunagara River for rafting.
The rapids on the Cipunagara River are classified as grade 2 and grade 3 rafting. Scouting and maneuvering skills are required when navigating the 10 km path commonly used as a rafting track. Nevertheless, with the support of a team of reliable operators, even beginners can safely go rafting down this river.
You won’t have to look too hard finding a rafting operator around the Cipunagara River. Just hit “Cipunagara river rafting” or “arung jeram Sungai Cipunagara” on your browser’s search engine and you’ll find a list of operators there.
Generally, with the existing path, rafting on the Cipunagara River will take about 2.5 hours. Though it definitely can be longer during days when the water discharge is more calm and small, for instance, during the dry season. However, even when the water discharge is high, you’re advised against rafting, especially if you’re a beginner. So, it’s best you avoid the peak of monsoon or rainy season. Due to these reasons, if you’re a beginner, you should carefully choose the right time, preferably during the season transition time. Consult ahead with the operators.
While rafting, you’ll come across several both small and large rapids. If the water discharge is small, boats would commonly get stuck in rocks and cause trouble. And you won’t find rapids all the time, so when the water is calm, you can relaxedly swim for a second. Besides challenging yourself when facing the current, jumping off cliffs or rocks can be some of the other things you can do as an adrenaline-pumping activity. Just be careful!
The Cipunagara River can be an alternative weekend getaway for you who live in the Jabodetabek, Bandung, and several other cities in West Java. The rafting location of Cipunagara River itself is in Pesanggrahan Village, Kasomalang Sub-district, about 20 km from downtown of Subang Regency. From Jakarta, the rafting location can be reached in about 4 hours via the Cikopo - Palimanan toll road. Meanwhile, from Bandung, it takes 2 hours to get there by taking the Lembang and Ciater route.
The road leading to the starting point of the rafting in Cipunagara River is quite small, so a feeder vehicle is usually required if you come visiting with a large bus. There is also not much space that can be used as bus parking. One of which is in the PTPN VIII office yard. But if you use a smaller vehicle like minibuses or sedans, coming here won’t be a problem.
White water rafting on the Cipunagara River is somewhat considerably less-crowded when compared to other famous rivers. So, if you’re a beginner or just want to experience a laid-back rafting experience while avoiding the crowds, this place is perfect for you.
While fairly accessible, the last thing you want to do before and after going rafting is spending your energy on driving yourself there. To make sure you’re at your tiptop when rafting, you can use a car rental service when you go to the Cipunagara River. If you’re traveling in big groups, you can also rent an entire bus as opposed to renting many cars. It saves a lot of money and is more fun.
