Traveling in Lombok may be identical to beach-goers. However, mountaineers also have lots of places to go while they’re here. Apart from the beautiful stretches of beaches across the island, you should not forget that Lombok is also home to one of the highest mountains in Indonesia.
Blessed with ceaseless natural beauty and cultural wealth, those two make Lombok a complete package for travelers. The island is also close to Mandalika Pertamina International Street Circuit, where MotoGP was held earlier this year. It’s not surprising that travelers keep returning to this island.
For this visit, you can put aside your plan to visit the famous Senggigi Beach or the Kuta Mandalika area, which are among the favorite places for tourists. Get your carrier, and pack your jacket; we’re going on a full-on adventure of hiking hills and mountains and trekking through the dense forests of Lombok.
Standing tall at 3,726 meters above sea level, the peak of Mt. Rinjani is what mountaineers call a dream peak. This peak is said to be one of the highest points in Indonesia. The height of Mt. Rinjani itself is still up for debate. Many say that Rinjani is the third-highest mountain in Indonesia, while others claim it as the fourth-highest after Puncak Jaya, Kerinci, and Semeru.
There are four routes commonly taken by tourists and mountaineers when climbing to the peak, including the Sembalun route, the Senaru route, the Aik Berik route, and the TImbanuh route. You may need to spare a week to fully experience Rinjani, including a comfortable hike, enjoy the beauty of the surroundings, and stop by other destinations on Lombok.
Piawangan Sembalun is the last post you will find on the journey to the peak of Mt. Rinjani via the Sembalum Village route. Those who don’t intend to climb all the way to the peak can camp at this location while enjoying the beautiful mountain views. You can also continue your journey to the famous Segara Anak Lake.
The best time to enjoy Piawangan Sembalun is between April, May, and early June. The combination of clouds and green savanna on the Sembalun side and Segara Anak lake on the other side is a genuinely jaw-dropping view; they easily soothe your eyes and soul. From here, you can also witness the majestic peak of Mt. Rinjani.
Exploring the Sesaot Forest to try out downhill sports can be an option when visiting Sesaot Tourism Village. Want to relax more? You can stop by the Community Recreation Center and enjoy the turquoise natural baths. Experience spending the night in a traditional house typical of the Sasak Tribe.
Administratively, this tourism village is located in the Narmada sub-district, West Lombok Regency, and can be reached around 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from Lombok International Airport. Sesaot Village is situated within the Punikan Ancient Volcano and not far from the Rinjani Volcano complex.
Located at the foot of Mt. Rinjani to the north, these two waterfalls give you an experience of a lifetime, especially if you’re fond of some off-the-beaten-path destinations. Around two hours' ride from Mataram, you will arrive at the gate to the two waterfalls.
After you get to the gate, it only takes a 15-minute walk to reach Sendang Gile. If you’re up for more challenges, walk another 45 minutes through the forest and across the river to reach Tiu Kelep to witness an enchanting drop of water.
Just like their names, the view that they offer is equally unique. Unlike typical waterfalls that usually fall from the top of a hill, here, you will be hypnotized by the water that falls in between the lush greenery. Ensure you come at the right time when the water discharge is high and clean to picture the best view.
Both waterfalls are separated by 1 kilometer and are located inside Mt. Rinjani Geopark. From Senggigi, a quick 90 minutes ride will give you a breathtaking view and an endless bucket of joy playing around the waterfall. But keep in mind to always be careful!
