The Lunar New Year celebrations don’t just end with the turn of the calendar. This vibrant festival extends for 15 days, culminating in Cap Go Meh, the grand finale marking the official close of the festivities.
As February 2025 comes to an end, cities around the world, Indonesia included, will be alive with cultural performances, traditional rituals, and a feast of culinary delights. Cap Go Meh is more than just a celebration; it’s a time for togetherness, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune in the year ahead.
Curious about how this centuries-old tradition is celebrated in Indonesia? Get ready for an exciting blend of heritage, flavors, and festivities that you won’t want to miss. Here’s what to expect from Cap Go Meh 2025.
The name Cap Go Meh comes from the Hokkien dialect, meaning “15th night”, a reference to the first full moon in the Chinese lunar calendar. This festival marks the grand conclusion of the Lunar New Year celebrations before people return to their daily routines.
In Chinese tradition, Cap Go Meh is closely linked to the Lantern Festival, where glowing lanterns symbolize hope and prosperity for the year ahead. Beyond its festive atmosphere, the celebration carries deep spiritual significance.
In many communities, people gather for prayer rituals to honor their ancestors and seek blessings for the future. More than just a closing ceremony, Cap Go Meh is a time to strengthen family bonds and reinforce the values of unity and togetherness within the community.
As a multicultural nation, Indonesia hosts some of the most unique and vibrant Cap Go Meh celebrations in the world. In several regions, the festival is enriched with local cultural influences, creating a fascinating blend of Chinese traditions and Indonesian heritage.
Renowned as one of Indonesia’s largest Cap Go Meh celebrations, Singkawang’s festival in West Kalimantan never fails to draw nationwide attention.
In 2025, the Singkawang Cap Go Meh Festival will take place from January 27 to February 13, bringing festivities to nearly every corner of the city.
The highlight of the celebration is the Tatung Parade, a mesmerizing display of spiritual rituals and supernatural feats. This year’s parade is set to begin on Wednesday, February 12, at 7:00 AM, starting from the Singkawang Mayor’s Office and winding through the city’s main streets.
In Bogor, also known as the Rain City, the Cap Go Meh celebration takes the form of the Bogor Street Festival. This lively event will take place along Jalan Suryakencana - Siliwangi on February 12, from 3:00 PM to midnight.
Visitors can experience the harmony between Chinese and local cultures through a spectacular parade featuring archipelago art performances, Liong and Barongsai (dragon and lion dances), marching bands, ogoh-ogoh (Balinese effigies), and even marawis (Islamic percussion music).
This year, the festival will also feature Ba Jia-Jiang, a traditional Taiwanese performance troupe, adding to the vibrant cultural showcase.
No Cap Go Meh celebration is complete without indulging in its signature dishes. These traditional foods, deeply rooted in cultural heritage, bring together flavors from both Chinese and Indonesian influences. Here are two must-try dishes during Cap Go Meh:
This dish is a perfect example of Chinese-Indonesian cultural fusion. Originating from the Peranakan Chinese communities in Semarang and Surabaya, Lontong Cap Go Meh is a flavorful twist on the classic lontong sayur (rice cake with vegetable curry).
A complete serving typically includes lontong (compressed rice cakes) paired with lodeh labu siam (chayote coconut curry) or bamboo shoot curry, opor ayam (braised chicken in coconut milk), balado eggs (spicy chili eggs), abing satay, soybean powder, and crispy dried tempeh.
Another beloved dish that blends Chinese tradition with Indonesian flavors is Wedang Ronde. Inspired by Tang Yuan, a traditional Chinese dessert, this dish features glutinous rice balls filled with crushed peanuts, served in a warm, fragrant broth.
While Tang Yuan is typically served in a clear, sweet syrup, Wedang Ronde takes on a distinct Indonesian touch with a brown sugar-based broth infused with ginger, giving it a slightly spicy, comforting warmth.
With its unique blend of Chinese and local traditions, the Cap Go Meh 2025 celebration is a must-experience event. From vibrant parades to rich culinary delights, this festival showcases Indonesia’s diverse heritage, making it the perfect addition to your travel bucket list.
