Jakarta always feels more alive around its anniversary. It’s the perfect time to gather your friends or family and explore what the city has to offer.
As the locals say, there’s no shortage of destinations in Jakarta. Whether you’re into upscale attractions or just want to keep things low-cost, the capital’s got something for everyone.
If you’re looking to have fun on a budget, here are some free spots around the city that are well worth your time.
Let’s start with the city’s most iconic symbol—Monas (The National Monument). You can enjoy the monument from the outside and take photos for free. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., it’s also a great spot for early morning walks or evening jogs around the plaza.
On weekends, don’t miss the dancing fountain show held in two sessions—7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.—at no cost. Entry to the surrounding grounds is free, though you’ll need a ticket (IDR 3,000–24,000) if you want to visit the museum inside or go up to the top of the monument.
If you’re a fan of history and old-world charm, Fatahillah Square in Jakarta’s Old Town is a must-see. Once the heart of the old city hall, this plaza is surrounded by colonial buildings that take you back to the Dutch era. It’s a great place to wander, snap photos, and soak up the atmosphere.
As the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, Istiqlal is more than a place of worship—it’s a destination in its own right. Locals and international visitors alike come to admire its striking architecture.
Located just across from the Jakarta Cathedral, it also stands as a symbol of religious harmony. If you’re lucky, you might even get to walk through the “Silaturahmi Tunnel” that connects the two places of worship.
Want a beach vibe without leaving the city? Head to Aloha Beach in PIK 2. This man-made beach has quickly become a weekend favorite among locals.
Entry is free, you just show up and enjoy the sunset. There’s also a stylish food court nearby, so bring a little extra cash for snacks and drinks.
Setu Babakan is the go-to place to experience Betawi culture up close. Located in South Jakarta, this cultural village is managed by the local community and showcases traditional Betawi houses, complete with classic architecture and authentic details.
The best part? You can catch free live performances like traditional dance, Lenong theater, Gambang Kromong music, and the famous ondel-ondel, all staged regularly in the open-air theater.
Jakarta isn’t just concrete and skyscrapers. The city has several lush parks designed for relaxation, family time, or solo strolls. Many of them are modern, family-friendly, and open to the public, no ticket needed.
Here are a few favorites:
If your idea of a perfect break includes a good book, Jakarta has two standout public libraries you shouldn’t miss: Perpustakaan Jakarta and Taman Literasi Martha Christina Tiahahu.
The Jakarta Library in Cikini is sleek and modern, with cozy reading areas and a wide selection of books. Meanwhile, the Taman Literasi in Blok M blends a public park with an open-air reading space, where you can enjoy a book while watching the city go by.
Every year during Jakarta’s anniversary, the local government often offers free admission to several museums and city-run amusement parks.
There hasn’t been an official announcement for this year’s list just yet, so keep an eye on updates from the Jakarta administration.
