The holiday season is here, and for many, it’s the perfect opportunity to plan a family getaway or head back to the hometown for a nostalgic visit.

To make these journeys more seamless, several new toll roads are officially opening just in time for the 2024 Christmas and New Year holidays.

These new toll routes promise to ease congestion on major roads, reduce travel times, and offer an alternative to traffic-heavy routes. Whether you’re planning a scenic road trip or a quick homecoming, these toll roads are ready to enhance your holiday experience.

Here’s a complete rundown of the new toll routes now in operation, plus functional toll roads you can use this season.

New Toll Road Sections for the 2024/2025 Holiday Season

Cimanggis-Cibitung Toll Road (Section 2B: Cikeas-Cibitung)

This newly completed section of the Cimanggis-Cibitung Toll Road connects Bogor to the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road, offering a direct path for travelers heading to Cipali or Cipularang. With its completion in mid-2024, the total length of this toll road now spans 26.18 km.

Toll Fee: IDR 54,000 for Class 1 vehicles (includes IDR 5,500 for Cimanggis Junction to Jatikarya and IDR 48,500 for Jatikarya to Cibitung Junction). The toll applies on an open-system basis, so fees depend on your entry and exit points.

Cibitung-Cilincing Toll Road (Cibitung Junction)

A short but essential link, this new section connects the existing Cibitung-Cilincing Toll with Cimanggis-Cibitung, providing seamless access between Jakarta’s northern regions and Bogor. It also enables faster access to Tanjung Priok Port.

Solo-Yogyakarta-NYIA Toll Road (Section 1.1: Kartasura-Klaten)

Connecting two of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations, the Kartasura-Klaten section of the Solo-Yogyakarta Toll Road spans 22.3 km and opened in November 2024.

With an operational toll fee of IDR 42,500, this route shortens the drive between Solo and Yogyakarta, making it a more convenient option for travelers. More functional sections are set to open during the holiday season, enhancing connectivity.

Serpong-Balaraja Toll Road (Section 1B: CBD-Legok)

This toll road adds a new route for commuters in the Tangerang area and provides another access point for those heading to the Jakarta-Merak Toll Road.

Ciawi-Sukabumi Toll Road (Section: Cigombong-Cibadak)

While this section has been operational since last year, landslides forced a temporary closure. It reopened in October 2024, allowing drivers to bypass heavy congestion on the main road to Sukabumi.

While it doesn’t reach Sukabumi City just yet, it already alleviates traffic at several bottlenecks.

Indrapura-Kisaran Toll Road (Section 2: Lima Puluh-Kisaran)

Part of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road, this 32.6-km section in North Sumatra links Medan to Kisaran. With a toll fee of IDR 64,000, it significantly cuts travel time from Medan to Kisaran, making it a strategic part of the Sumatra toll network.

Kuala Tanjung–Tebing Tinggi–Parapat Toll Road (Section 3: Tebing Tinggi–Dolok Merawan and part of Section 4: Dolok Merawan–Sinaksak)

This strategic route links Kuala Tanjung’s industrial hub to the breathtaking Lake Toba, a tourist hotspot. Travelers can now access Lake Toba faster without relying on the often-congested national roads.

Pekanbaru-Padang Toll Road (Segment: Bangkinang-XIII Koto Kampar)

This newly launched 36.6 km toll segment is a crucial link between Pekanbaru and Padang, offering a smoother and faster inter-province travel experience.

Drivers passing through this route will be treated to scenic views along the way, making the drive as visually rewarding as it is time-saving.

With the opening of this section, the toll fee from Pekanbaru to Bangkinang is set at IDR 86,000 for Class 1 vehicles. This route is more than just a shortcut—it’s a gateway to some of Sumatra’s most iconic tourist destinations.

Thanks to the improved connectivity, travelers now have easier access to popular spots like Harau Valley and Lake Singkarak, both known for their stunning natural beauty.

By reducing travel time and offering picturesque views, this toll road is set to drive up tourism along its route while providing a more efficient path for local commuters.

Betung-Tempino-Jambi Toll Road (Section 3: Bayung Lencir-Tempino)

Connecting Jambi with South Sumatra, this 34.1-km stretch has been operational since October 2024. The route supports logistics and boosts access to Sumatra’s eastern corridor.

Functional Toll Roads for the 2024/2025 Holiday Season

In addition to the official toll roads, several functional toll roads are also available for temporary use during the holiday period. Functional toll roads are free of charge but come with limited facilities, such as no streetlights or rest areas.

Jakarta-Cikampek II South (Section 3: Kutanegara-Sadang)

This 8.5-km stretch provides a vital alternative for Jakarta-Bandung travelers, reducing congestion on the main Jakarta-Cikampek route. However, users must briefly switch to the main road before rejoining the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.

Solo-Yogyakarta-NYIA (Section 1.2: Klaten-Prambanan)

The 8.6 km Klaten–Prambanan segment extends the Solo–Yogyakarta Toll Road, operating from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

This adds to the 22.3 km Kartasura–Klaten section, which charges a toll fee of IDR 42,500, offering a smoother connection between Solo and Yogyakarta.

Probolinggo-Banyuwangi Toll Road (Section: Gending-Kraksaan)

This 12.9-km functional section on East Java’s eastern tip makes road trips to Bali easier, offering a smoother ride for island-hopping adventurers.

Sigli-Banda Aceh Toll Road (Section 1: Padang Tiji-Seulimeum)

The 24.6-km Padang Tiji-Seulimeum section connects Banda Aceh to Sigli, marking a milestone as the first toll road in Aceh province.

Binjai-Langsa Toll Road (Section 3: Tanjung Pura-Pangkalan Brandan)

A crucial connection in northern Sumatra, this 19-km route speeds up travel along Sumatra’s eastern coast, linking Binjai and Langsa.

Kuala Tanjung-Tebing Tinggi-Parapat (Section 2: Kuala Tanjung-Indrapura)

This 10.1 km stretch serves as a key connector to the Kuala Tanjung International Port, providing smoother logistics and travel access. It also offers an alternative route for travelers heading to the Lake Toba region, reducing reliance on congested national roads.

Pekanbaru-Padang Toll Road (Section 1: Padang-Sicincin)

This 36.6-km stretch forms part of the larger Pekanbaru-Padang Toll Road, easing travel toward Bukittinggi and beyond.

Stay Safe When Using Functional Toll Roads

Functional toll roads are temporary, often lacking the full facilities of standard toll roads. If you’re planning to use them, follow these essential safety tips:

Check Your Vehicle

Ensure your brakes, tires, and lights are in top condition. Functional toll roads may have uneven surfaces and limited lighting.

Monitor Road Access and Schedule

Functional toll roads typically operate on a limited schedule, so it’s best to check for real-time updates on their availability. Due to minimal lighting, these roads are usually open only from morning to late afternoon.

Some sections may also allow traffic in one direction only, depending on traffic conditions. Stay updated by following official social media channels and news outlets for the latest operational schedules.

Carry Food and Fuel

Unlike regular tolls, functional roads often lack rest areas. Bring snacks, water, and a full tank of fuel to avoid interruptions.

Follow Signs and Staff Instructions

Observe speed limits and follow directions from on-site personnel. Temporary roads may have restricted speed limits for safety.

Use GPS and Digital Maps

Some functional toll roads may not be fully connected to the existing toll network, as seen with the Japek Selatan functional route.

To avoid confusion, keep track of your route using digital maps or GPS, and consider having a navigator on hand to guide you. This allows you to stay focused on the road and prioritize safe driving at all times.
