The movie "Petualangan Sherina 2" features more than just the beautiful landscapes of Kalimantan. Another breathtaking location showcased in the film is Martello Fort. If you've seen "Petualangan Sherina 2," you'll likely remember the scenes set in this unique location.
For those who haven't yet seen the movie, don't worry! We at TRAC won't spoil it for you. Instead, we're here to offer a glimpse into the wonder of exploring Martello Fort and the surrounding destinations.
Whether you're an adventurer like Sherina and Sadam or just looking for a peaceful retreat, this place has something for everyone. Let's dive into some interesting facts about Martello Fort.
Fort Martello is conveniently located close to Jakarta. In fact, it's so close that you might say it's just a stone’s throw away from the the capital’s downtown.
What's more, it's still part of the DKI Jakarta Province! Fort Martello can be found on Kelor Island in the Seribu Islands Regency. Kelor Island is grouped with several other notable islands, including Petandan, Kelapa, Onrust, Bidadari, and Cipir.
Fort Martello, also known as the Fort Menara, is the highlight of Kelor Island. Distinguished by its iconic red brick facade, the fort is not only a sight to behold but is also rich in history. Constructed by the VOC in 1850, it was designed to fend off attacks from Portuguese troops.
Despite having weathered wars and various natural disasters, this historic fort remains remarkably sturdy. Interestingly, Fort Martello is not alone; it has three "sibling" forts located on Cipir Island, Bidadari Island, and Onrust Island. However, of these, only the structures on Kelor and Bidadari Islands have largely remained intact.
Much like the Kelor (Moringa) plant, with its tiny leaves but immense benefits, Kelor Island might be small in size but is packed with charm.
This 28-hectare island is surrounded by crystal-clear waters, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling enthusiasts. If you prefer staying dry, you can simply relax on its pristine white sands and soak in the sun's warmth.
Just remember to pack some sunscreen! And while you're there, don't miss the chance to capture memories. Snap a picture in front of Fort Martello or with the stone wall that reads "Pulau Kelor" as your backdrop.
To get to Fort Martello, you'll need to take a boat. You have options: either hop on a speedboat from Marina Ancol Pier or board a traditional wooden boat, often referred to as the "people's boat" or kapal rakyat, from Kamal Muara Pier in Penjaringan, North Jakarta or from Tanjung Pasir Pier in Tangerang, Banten.
The journey from Kamal Muara Pier to Kelor Island typically takes about 45 minutes. If you choose to depart from Marina Ancol Pier on a speedboat, the trip will be significantly shorter. As you approach Kelor Island, the iconic Fort Martello will greet you.
Should you decide to visit Kelor Island with a travel agent, many packages often include visits to a couple of other islands, typically Cipir Island and Onrust. Some travel agents even offer convenient one-day trip packages to explore all three islands.
Not far to the west of Kelor Island lies Cipir Island, sometimes referred to as Khayangan Island. Even though it's smaller than Kelor Island, Cipir Island is rich in history. Here, you'll find remnants of Dutch colonial times, such as forts and ancient inscriptions.
While the fort on Cipir Island isn't as well-preserved as others, it still offers a unique backdrop for photos. For thrill-seekers, the island also offers a fun Banana Boat ride that promises an adrenaline rush.
Another neighboring island is Onrust Island. Many visitors get confused between one island and another because both islands are home to remnants of forts.
However, the fort on Onrust Island stands just as resilient as the Martello Fort on Kelor Island. Onrust boasts a large building that has been repurposed into a museum, housing historical records of the island.
Historically, Onrust Island served various roles: a transit island, a VOC shipyard, and even a supervisory fortress. Its purpose evolved over time, becoming a quarantine hospital, sanatorium, and prison camp before finally being abandoned. Echoes of its past can still be witnessed in the remaining structures and ruins scattered throughout the island.
Kepulauan Seribu or the Thousand Islands are hidden gems, often overlooked despite their proximity to the bustling capital. Who would've thought that just a stone's throw from the city's hustle and bustle lies such pristine nature, clear waters, and historical treasures.
