In a nod to Indonesia’s rich history and natural beauty, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto recently invited ministers, deputy ministers, and special envoys from the Red and White Cabinet to gather at Mount Tidar or also known as Tidar Valley.
This site, with its deep historical roots and stunning landscapes, has captured the interest of both officials and travelers alike.
Prabowo chose Mount Tidar with purpose, emphasizing its significance in Indonesia’s national struggle. Beyond its storied past, Mount Tidar offers lush greenery, fresh mountain air, and an atmosphere that refreshes the spirit.
Wondering what makes Mount Tidar stand out? Let’s dive into its unique history, breathtaking views, and cultural significance.
Mount Tidar, also known as Tidar Hill or Bukit Tidar, is located in Magelang City, Central Java Province, close to the city center, hotels, and shopping centers.
At 503 meters above sea level, it offers a manageable climb for visitors of all ages. Originally designated as a urban forest, its status was elevated to the Gunung Tidar Botanical Gardens in 2021.
If you’re visiting the nearby Borobudur Temple, Mount Tidar is an easy add-on, just under an hour away. From Yogyakarta, it’s a bit farther, but still accessible within two hours.
A visit to the Gunung Tidar Botanical Gardens is highly affordable, with entry costing only IDR 3,000, making it ideal for students or budget-conscious travelers.
Open 24 hours a day, it’s a perfect spot for camping. Just note that ticketing is temporarily paused on Fridays from 11 am to 1 pm.
Mount Tidar is not only a natural escape but also a place of deep historical and cultural importance. Known as the “Java’s Sacred Anchor,” locals believe the mountain serves as a spiritual anchor for the island of Java.
Reaching the peak of Mount Tidar involves a climb of 1,002 steps, each representing a commitment to the journey.
Along the way, you’ll encounter several revered tombs, including those of Syekh Subakir, a respected figure in Javanese spiritual history, and Kyai Sepanjang, a symbolic spear linked to Syekh Subakir. These sacred sites attract visitors seeking spiritual connection and cultural insights.
Additionally, the botanical gardens hold other points of interest, such as the Tomb of Mbah Semar, the Resting Place of Asia’s Cigar King, and various monuments, including the Sa Monument and the One Nation Homeland Monument.
On the mountain’s east side, the Javanese Eagle Park Observation Post offers a clear view of Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi on clear days, with sunrise being especially captivating.
Recent photos showing tents pitched for ministers, deputy ministers, and special staff on Mount Tidar have captured public attention. These exclusive camps were set up near the Military Academy, located just west of the Gunung Tidar Botanical Gardens.
Thanks to its proximity, Mount Tidar often serves as a training ground for academy cadets, who are affectionately nicknamed the “Tidar Valley Tigers.”
With its blend of cultural history, natural beauty, and ongoing significance as a training site, Mount Tidar is truly a unique destination. Whether you’re visiting for the history, the landscape, or the mystique, it’s worth exploring for any traveler in Central Java.
