Have you seen the movie Pabrik Gula yet? This horror flick made waves when it released an uncut version said to be even more spine-chilling. But it’s not just the story that has everyone talking, the filming location has also become a hot spot for curious travelers.
Turns out, the movie really was shot at an old sugar factory! One of the main locations is Agrowisata Gondang Winangoen in Klaten, Central Java. This site isn’t just a set, it’s a piece of history, with roots going back to 1860.
Beyond its long history, Gondang Winangoen is making a comeback as a must-visit destination that’s well worth exploring.
Built during the Dutch colonial era, Gondang Winangoen was once one of Indonesia’s largest sugar factories. It later operated under the name Pabrik Gula Gondang Baru before shutting down in the 1990s due to declining production.
Fun fact: Besides being featured in Pabrik Gula, Gondang Winangoen was also used as a filming location for Rudi Habibie in 2016.
Gondang Winangoen sits in Jogonalan district, Klaten Regency, a prime spot along the main route between Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
The well-preserved colonial buildings are a big draw, especially if you’re into vintage vibes and history. The cool, natural surroundings add to the charm, making it a relaxing escape.
In late 2023, the site rebranded as The Gondang Park, offering new attractions like outbound areas, a waterpark, various rides, a souvenir center, and a restaurant.
Visiting this historic sugar factory won’t break the bank. Entry to The Gondang Park is just Rp10,000, and a combo ticket (excluding the flying fox) is only Rp20,000.
It’s also a great spot for family gatherings or school field trips, with outbound packages starting at Rp40,000.
There’s more to Gondang Winangoen than just old buildings. Here’s what you can do:
Visiting famous filming locations can be a fun twist to your travel plans, just like the popular tours of AADC 2 spots or the Gadis Kretek series locations.
