A Taste of the World in Yogyakarta Without Breaking the Bank

  • In addition to gudeg and bakpia, Jogja also offers affordable international cuisine, from Italy, Europe, Vietnam, Japan, to Hong Kong, with authentic flavors.

  • Many unique restaurants and cafes are scattered throughout Yogyakarta, ranging from Aroma Italia with over 100 menu items, the legendary Golden Geisha Ramen, to Vietnamese-style Ban Pho Street Food.

Yogyakarta is full of stories. It’s not only rich in culture and history but also packed with flavors waiting to be discovered. No wonder so many travelers come here just to eat their way through the city.

From timeless street food to modern dining, Yogyakarta has it all. Of course, classics like gudegbakpiaangkringan, and sate klathak are always worth trying.

But the city doesn’t stop there. Beyond the traditional dishes, you’ll also find international restaurants serving flavors from Italy to Japan at prices that won’t drain your wallet.

5 Yogyakarta Dishes with International Flavors

1. Aroma Italia — Over 100 Homemade Italian Dishes

The name says it all. This local favorite serves authentic Italian comfort food starting at just IDR 30,000. Expect everything from pasta, pizza, lasagna, and bruschetta to creamy burrata and rustic fettuccine. Each one made in-house.

Pizza fans are spoiled for choice with more than 40 varieties and toppings, plus gluten-free options for those who need them. Aroma Italia has several branches around the city, including one on Jalan Kaliurang. Doors open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

2. Dapur Uthi of Sourdough (DUoS) — Artisan Breads with a European Touch

Sourdough has become a trend across Indonesian cities, but in Yogyakarta, DUoS stands out. The bakery mills its own flour, works its dough by hand, and even ships in specialty tools from overseas.

Signature loaves include rustic country bread, ciabatta, focaccia, vegan wheat, and cranberry walnut cream cheese. If you’re more into snacking, go for their bagels, pretzels, or chocolate babka.

Prices start from just IDR 28,000, making DUoS both affordable and gift-worthy. You’ll find them in Kotagede and Jalan Ngasem.

3. Ban Pho Street Food — Vietnam on a Small Street Corner

Step inside and you’re instantly transported to Hanoi. Short stools, colorful tables, and a compact menu give Ban Pho a true street-food vibe. In fact, it’s said to be the first Vietnamese street food spot in Indonesia.

The must-tries? Pho BoBo Vien, and Bánh mì. The noodle soups are light yet flavorful, served with slices of beef, bean sprouts, and fresh cilantro.

The Bánh mì comes with toasted bread, pickled veggies, savory minced beef, and a creamy sauce that ties it all together. Portions are generous, and prices start at IDR 30,000. Open daily except Tuesdays, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., on Jalan C. Simanjuntak.

4. Golden Geisha Ramen — Yogyakarta’s Most Talked-About Bowl

If ramen is your comfort food, Golden Geisha is the place. Consistently packed with diners, this spot inside Jogja City Mall has built a reputation for serving the best ramen in town.

Unlike many ramen shops that focus on chicken, Golden Geisha highlights beef toppings. From sliced beef and wagyu rolls to hearty saikoro cubes.

Try the Saikoro Ramen with shoyu broth if you prefer something clear and savory, or the Wagyu Chashu Ramen in baitan broth if you’re craving something creamy. Prices range from IDR 30,000 to 65,000. Pro tip: arrive early or book a reservation to avoid long waits.

5. Hong Kong Street Foods — Authentic Recipes from a Hong Kong Chef

Just five minutes from the iconic Tugu Jogja, this cozy spot is run by a Hong Kong native who brings family recipes straight to your table.

With more than 60 dishes on the menu, options include spicy Szechuan chicken rice, char siu Hainanese rice, wonton noodles, and xiao long bao.

The standout is the silky Steamed Egg with minced beef topping—simple but full of flavor. Dishes start at only IDR 15,000, with both set meals and à la carte options available. The shop is halal-certified and open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
