Jakarta, with its vibrant and diverse atmosphere, always manages to captivate visitors, including tourists. At 497 years old, Jakarta offers a range of destinations that showcase its rich history and modern advancements.
As the largest city in the country, Jakarta never sleeps. While one day may not be enough to fully explore this bustling metropolis, there are always ways to enjoy Jakarta, even if you only have a short time.
For tourists with just one day to explore Jakarta, it will be an unforgettable experience. There are many attractions that showcase different aspects of the city. Hereās a one-day itinerary, presented by TRAC, that offers a taste of both the past and present of this vibrant metropolis.
Start your day with a bit of physical activity by taking a leisurely walk around Monas, Jakartaās iconic landmark that never fails to impress.
To fill your stomach, you can take a break and enjoy a serving of bubur ayam, a traditional chicken porridge with a unique savory broth. For a truly Jakarta-style breakfast, a bowl of mie ayam (chicken noodles) is the perfect foundation for the day ahead.
Not only can you enjoy the Monas grounds, but you can also explore the monument from the inside. The museum and monument ticket counters are open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If you have time, take in the view of Jakarta from the top of the monument.
The next stop on your journey is steeped in history. The old buildings inherited from the Dutch era still stand proudly in Taman Fatahillah, known as Jakarta Old Town.
Here, you can witness the remnants of Bataviaās former city center glory, including the office of the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, now the Jakarta History Museum, also known as the Fatahillah Museum.
The Old Town area also boasts several other museums, such as the Wayang Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics, the Bank Mandiri Museum, and the Bank Indonesia Museum. While you donāt need to visit all the museums in one trip, you can explore them one by one whenever you have the chance.
The Glodok Chinatown area has been around for hundreds of years and is part of the 139 hectares that once made up downtown Batavia.
Visiting Glodok is like stepping into a time machine, immersing yourself in its rich history. Known for more than just trade, Glodok is also famous for its culinary delights.
A cup of coffee from Es Kopi Tak Kie will refresh you after touring the Old Town. For lunch, you can try Medan-style curry at Kari Lam in Gang Gloria. If you prefer a more modern touch, head to Petak Enam, which offers a variety of food outlets.
The charm of Jakarta as a metropolitan city is just as captivating as its historical side. Discover the modern allure of Jakarta by visiting Grand Indonesia, one of the largest and most luxurious shopping centers in the city.
This mall boasts a mix of premium outlets and popular retailers, making it a perfect destination for some retail therapy.
But, if the mall atmosphere isnāt your style, then Chillax should be on your list. This trendy new hangout spot in Jakarta features a semi-outdoor concept and is nestled between skyscrapers. With several restaurants and a food court, Chillax is ideal for grabbing a snack and hanging out with friends.
Next, head to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) in East Jakarta. Make sure to visit the Jakarta Pavilion, where you can see a replica of a traditional Betawi house.
As evening falls, donāt miss the TMII fountain show, which is considered one of the top 5 fountains in the world. The show features a stunning display of water screens, colorful lights, and a dancing waterfall that will leave you in awe.
This spectacular performance runs daily from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Plaza Promenade, right in front of the Yogyakarta Pavilion.
If you still have energy after a day of exploring Jakarta, head back to the city center to end your day with a bang. Join the cityās vibrant youth scene in popular areas like Senayan, Kemang, and Blok M.
Senayan isnāt just home to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium; itās also known for its delicious street food. While Nasi Gila used to be the star, nowadays Sate Taichan is the must-try street food in the area.
A bit further south, youāll find the Blok M area, a favorite hangout spot for Jakartaās young crowd since the 1980s. Known as Little Tokyo, Blok M is filled with Japanese food outlets, some of which are open 24 hours.
Not far from Blok M is Jalan Senopati, affectionately nicknamed āSenoparty.ā In recent years, this area has become the heart of Jakartaās lively nightlife.
Enjoy live music performances and share stories of your dayās adventures, making it the perfect way to wrap up your one-day exploration of Jakarta.
Jakarta isnāt just exciting for tourists and newcomers; even long-time residents can find fresh experiences by exploring new spots and hidden gems scattered throughout the city.
