Muntilan Tourism: Discovering City M from 'Gadis Kretek'

Have you watched "Gadis Kretek," or "Cigarette Girl," featuring Dian Sastro? This show, adapted from a novel of the same name, unravels a love story between Dasiyah and Soeraja in the mysterious City M. Unlike other cities mentioned in the series, City M's true identity remains a puzzle even at the end.

Ratih Kumala, the author, revealed that City M is actually Muntilan. This sub-district, part of Magelang Regency, holds special significance for her. It's where she spent her childhood, and she even included several hints about it in her novel.

Curious about Muntilan, also known as City M? TRAC has gathered some exciting information and must-visit tourist spots for when you're there.

5 Things to Know about Muntilan

Muntilan's Prime Location Between Yogya and Magelang

Muntilan is ideally situated, nestled right between Yogyakarta and Magelang. It's a mere 33 km north of Yogyakarta City and about 16 km south of Magelang's city center.

If you're heading to Borobudur Temple from Yogyakarta, you'll likely pass through Muntilan. Why not take a short break here? It's a great opportunity to explore and experience City M up close.

Nyonya Pang Legendary Store

In the "Gadis Kretek" novel, the mention of Wajik Nyonya Pang and Nyonya Week on page 241 hints strongly at Muntilan being the real-life City M. Nyonya Pang's shop, established in 1912, is famous for its traditional snacks and market treats.

The shop's star products include cupcakes, moho, miku, and the renowned wajik. Moho and Miku are unique Peranakan cakes; moho is a bun filled with green beans, while miku is a filling-free cake shaped into beautiful blossoms.

This shop also offers other treats like bakpia, a variety of chips, and the signature Muntilan sticky rice tape, which is also mentioned in the novel.

Step Back in Time at Ngawen Temple

Ngawen Temple, a Buddhist site, is modest in size, offering a minimalist yet profound historical experience. Just a 10-minute drive from the Nyonya Pang Shop, located in Ngawen Village, it's easily accessible. You can use a digital map for directions or ask the friendly local residents.

Discovered in 1927, Ngawen Temple is believed to have been built by the Syailendra Dynasty. Originally, the complex is thought to have housed five temples, but today, only the second temple has been restored and is open to visitors. While there's no admission fee, it's a good idea to have some cash ready for a donation to help with the temple's upkeep.

A Culinary Destination with Diverse Flavors

Muntilan offers a rich variety of culinary experiences worth exploring. Start with 'Blendrang,' a wheat flour porridge often accompanied by chicken or goat bones. Finding this dish in Muntilan is easy, with several stalls available, but the most renowned one is in Bintaro Hamlet, Gunungpring Village.

Once you're in the Magelang area, don't miss out on the famous Magelang kupat tahu. This delightful dish features pieces of ketupat (rice cake) and tofu, topped with bean sprouts and a unique blend of spices that create a sweet and savory flavor.

Another must-try is Mangut Beong, a dish made with Beong fish, which are similar to catfish but slightly larger. Mangut is a soup-like dish common in Central Java and East Java, reminiscent of curry but with a thinner consistency.

A Stone's Throw from Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple, one of the region's most iconic landmarks, is less than 15 km or a short 30-minute drive from the bustling center of Muntilan. This makes Muntilan an ideal base for visitors looking to explore Borobudur and its surrounding attractions.

Nearby must-visit sites include Punthuk Setumbu, Rhema Prayer Hill (also known as the Chicken Church), Mendut Temple, and Selogriyo Temple.

Another highlight is Svarga Bumi Borobudur, a popular recreational area known for its stunning aesthetics. It's the perfect spot to spend a relaxing afternoon with friends.
