Jepara is one of the regencies that sits on the north coast of Java, located not far from Semarang, the capital of Central Java. One of the things that Jepara is famous for is the hometown of Raden Ajeng Kartini or RA Kartini, a national hero known for her struggle to fight for women's emancipation during the Dutch colonial era. So, don’t be surprised if you see her name in many places, including tourist destinations.

Besides everything related to the history of RA Kartini, Jepara is also the abode of many tourist destinations. If you’re planning for a homecoming trip to the Pantura region, Jepara should definitely be on your stopover list as a place to enjoy the beauty of this coastal town.

5 recommended tourist destinations in Jepara

1. Kartini Beach, Jepara’s travel hotspot

You can say that Kartini Beach is an all-in-one destination in Jepara. Besides the beach with water perfect proper to have fun in, Kartini Beach also offers many other attractions that are no less exciting. Take some time after sunbathing to visit the Kura-Kura Ocean Park and Jepara Science Park.

One week after the Eid celebration is the best time to visit this beach. That’s the time when the locals hold the Lomban procession. Prepare yourself for the festivities typical only to the coastal communities. Don’t forget to bring food and drinks because it is reported that many businesses in Jepara choose to close temporarily during the procession.

Besides the Beach, Kartini’s name is also immortalized in pavilions, monuments, and a museum. Take the time to trace the history of RA Kartini, our emancipation hero.

2. Sreni Forest Park, a serene pine forest at the foot of Mount Muria

Sitting in tranquility at the foot of Mount Muria, this forest park is cool and provides ample fresh air. Spoil your eyes, feast on the beautiful lush green scenery, and relax with your family. Take a picture among the row of trees in the background that is too good to miss. There are also several other photo spots with the addition of an epic installation. Sreni Indah Forest Park or Wana Wisata Sreni Indah is located in a protected forest area where part of the forest is used for tourism.

3. Jurang Nganten Waterfall perfect for the outdoor geek

Make sure that you’re in your best and healthy condition if you decide to visit Jurang Nganten Waterfall. It takes a little trekking effort to reach this 50-meter-high waterfall. All of your efforts will pay off as soon as the fresh splash of water greets your face and a breathtaking view on the slopes of Mount Muria. Here, you can simply relax while admiring the heavy waterfall stream or get your adrenaline pumping by playing in the water and jumping off the rocks. But always, be careful!

4. Tempur Tourist Village and Bejagan Hill, Jepara’s one-stop destination

The location is a bit far from downtown Jepara, about 50 km or at least 90 minutes drive from the city center. However, outdoor freaks should not miss out on these places. From the charming vast rice fields, the exotic Gajah Mungkur Peak, the treehouse that perfectly sits on a tree in Bejagah Hill, to the wooden deck, which is a favorite photo spot among the visitors, these are among the things that you will enjoy here. If you want to spend the night around the area, there are several lodging facilities managed by residents and a network of tourist villages.

5. Karimunjawa Islands with its stunning underwater beauty

The Karimunjawa Islands are the prima donna of Jepara. Its stunning underwater beauty has attracted visitors, both locals and foreigners alike. You can hop on boats that depart from Kartini Harbor, Jepara, or from Semarang to get here. Because the boats only operate on certain days, make sure you check ahead and plan your visit on the operational schedule.

Get your snorkeling gear ready to greet the beautiful fish underwater and experience the biodiversity of Karimunjawa. Not keen on that? Go fishing or island hopping to small islands around the main island. Besides leisure visits, people come to Karimunjawa for a pilgrimage visit as well.

Besides the 5 destinations above, Jepara is also home to many other destinations that you can visit, like Tritip Cave, Bubrah Temple, Punuk Sapi Beach, Pungkruk Beach, Panjang Island, Setatah Waterfall, and others. But make sure you have enough time if you want to visit them all.
