Surakarta, or as it's locally known, Solo, is a vibrant city nestled in Central Java, Indonesia. Its variety of cultural, historical, and culinary offerings weaves a unique charm, making it a destination worth exploring.
Nestled between Karanganyar and Sukoharjo Regencies, and bordered by the Solo River on the east, the city is an accessible gem, spread over an area of 46.72 km².
This city, the birthplace of the Indonesian President Joko Widodo, boasts several attractions that showcase the depth of its heritage. From the grandeur of the Keraton Surakarta, the royal palace of Susuhunan Pakubuwono, to the bustling Pasar Gede market, the city offers tourists a plethora of experiences.
Its markets such as Pasar Klewer and Triwindu Antique Market specialize in batiks and antiques, respectively, ensuring that every visitor can bring home a piece of Solo's unique culture. Its entertainment parks, like Taman Sriwedari, offer diverse amusement choices, from children's playgrounds to traditional Javanese dance performances.
This article will take you on a one-day journey through Solo's must-visit spots and gastronomic delights, demonstrating how a TRAC rental car can make your exploration of Solo an unforgettable adventure.
Your first stop is Kraton Surakarta, a majestic palace entrenched in Javanese culture. As you enter, the historic charm and distinctive architecture transport you back in time, the allure of its past still echoing in its courtyards.
The palace, which also serves as a museum, offers a visual feast of relics, from ornate carriages to ancient statues. Don't miss the opportunity to witness the royal banyan trees, famously moved with the palace's establishment in 1745. If you're there on a Sunday, catch the traditional dance practice.
For a nostalgic journey into the past, visit the Triwindu Antique Market, a haven for antique lovers and collectors. This market, also known as Windujenar Market, is located not far from the Mangkunegaran Palace, presenting a unique trading experience.
Housed within a wooden structure that dates back to 1945, the market is an antique itself. It offers a diverse array of artifacts, varying in cultural significance and artistic value.
From small accessories to vintage bicycles, furniture, and more, each item tells a tale of times gone by. The market even maintains a barter system, encouraging exchange of antiquities. Uncover relics of the past at Triwindu, open daily from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.
Our journey continues to Sriwedari Park, a historical complex nestled in Laweyan, Surakarta City. Since the era of Pakubuwana X, Sriwedari Park has hosted traditional evening entertainment events called Malam Selikuran. The park even held the first PON (National Sports Week) in 1948.
Sriwedari Park was developed by Pakubuwana X, a hub of entertainment, arts, and culture. It features the Gedung Wayang Orang Sriwedari (GWO Sriwedari), an open-air theatre known for staging traditional Javanese performances, like the epic tales from Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Even though the condition of GWO Sriwedari has been deteriorating due to the ongoing ownership dispute and shifting public interest to modern entertainment, it remains a unique glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region.
The Danar Hadi Batik Museum, nestled in Solo's historic Ndalem Wuryaningratan compound, stands as a testament to founder Danar Hadi's dedication to the preservation and promotion of batik art.
Opened in 2008, the renowned cultural venue showcases over 700 meticulously selected batik pieces from a collection of 10,000, spanning diverse cultural influences and eras. Inside, expert guides provide insightful tours, with a highlight being a live batik-making demonstration.
The compound, also housing the restored 19th-century Ndalem Wuryaningratan mansion, offers an immersive experience with its on-site restaurant, Soga, and a shop full of batik variety. The museum is widely recognised as a top destination in Solo, Central Java, offering an unmatched journey through batik history.
Next, we journey to Laweyan Batik Village, a batik hub since the 19th century and an emblem of Solo's batik tradition. Occupying a 24.83-acre area, this vibrant village with 2,500 residents mainly engaged in batik production and sales, is renowned for its distinctive batik motifs - 250 of which are patented.
Unlike the dark, classic motifs of Kauman's batik, Laweyan offers lighter coloured batik. The village, featuring unique Javanese, European, Chinese and Islamic architectural influences, extends its appeal beyond batik. Visitors can take short courses or intensive workshops in batik-making in Laweyan.
Feasting in Solo is a culinary journey through time. Start your day with a warming bowl of Timlo at Warung Timlo Sastro, a breakfast staple that has kept Solo's culinary tradition alive. When lunchtime rolls around, make your way to Warung Bu Widodo, famed for its Nasi Liwet - a fragrant, coconut-infused dish that encapsulates Solo's flavours.
As the afternoon beckons, satisfy your sweet tooth with Srabi Notosuman, a local delicacy featuring sweet, syrupy pancakes. Conclude your day at Warung Sate Pak Kempleng, where succulent Sate Kambing, or goat satay, provides the perfect close to a day filled with the authentic tastes of Solo.
