Differences between Keyless Features and Immobilizers

As technology evolves, so does car technology. One of the most notable advancements is in key technology.

Nowadays, it is rare to find cars worth over Rp200 million that still use traditional keys. Modern cars now feature advanced technology systems that make it easier for drivers to operate them.

While people once needed keys to unlock doors and start engines, owners now only need to be within a meter of their car. The door will automatically unlock, and the engine will start after pushing a button on the dashboard.

This technology is known as keyless entry and immobilizer systems. Both make driving easier and provide enhanced security for the car, helping to prevent theft.

Despite their shared security function, these advanced features are different, though many people do not understand the distinction and think they are the same.

Are you one of them? Continue reading to understand the differences.

Key Differences between Keyless Features and Immobilizers

There are several essential differences between them. A keyless remote replaces a traditional key.

The immobilizer is embedded in the car and connected to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to process signals sent to the keyless remote. Put simply, the keyless feature does not work without the immobilizer system.

Keyless Feature

Also known as keyless entry, smart keyless, or intelligent key, this feature replaces the traditional key for unlocking doors and starting the engine.

This feature significantly improves convenience for car owners.Instead of inserting a key to unlock the door, they just need to be close to the door and pull its handle.

The same applies when leaving their cars in a parking lot. They simply close the door, andit automatically locks once the owner is a few meters away from the car.

In luxury cars, the keyless feature often has additional functions, such as remotely starting the engine, turning on lights, or activating the air conditioner to cool the cabin before entering.

This state-of-the-art feature is supported by transmitter technology connected to the immobilizer via the ECU.

Immobilizer

While the keyless feature replaces a key, the immobilizer is a security system that allows the keyless feature to function properly.

The driver can only start the engine if the immobilizer system receives a compatible signal sent from the keyless device via the ECU. This provides enhanced security for the car and helps prevent theft.

The engine will only start if the immobilizer receives the compatible signal from the ECU system. It won’t start when a duplicate key is inserted into the ignitionbecause the ECU won’t allow fuel to flow to the engine.

This advanced technology is one reason why modern cars are more expensive, but it also provides greater security.
