Exploring Bukittinggi: The City of a Proclaimer and Stunning Landscapes

14 August 2025

As Indonesia’s Independence Day approaches, there’s no better time to trace the footsteps of history in one of the nation’s most significant cities, Bukittinggi. This is the birthplace of Mohammad Hatta, one of Indonesia’s two Proclaimers of Independence.

Bukittinggi even served as Indonesia’s capital, though briefly. Between December 1948 and June 1949, the city became the seat of the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI) after Yogyakarta fell to Dutch forces.

Beyond its deep historical roots, Bukittinggi is also rich in natural beauty and cultural attractions. If you’re planning a trip here, this guide will help you make the most of your visit.

Step Into History at the Birthplace of Bung Hatta

  • Location: Jalan Soekarno Hatta No. 37, Bukittinggi
  • Hours: Daily, 8 a.m.–6 p.m
  • Admission: Free

A visit to Bukittinggi wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the home where Mohammad Hatta was born. Built in the 19th century, this traditional Minangkabau house still preserves its original architecture.

Inside, you’ll find Hatta’s personal belongings. His old typewriter, childhood bed, vintage suitcase, and study tools. The rooms are arranged exactly as they once were, giving visitors a sense of stepping back in time.

Hatta, born here on August 12, 1902, grew up as a diligent and intelligent child. His principles and dedication to the nation were shaped by the strong educational and cultural values of Minangkabau society.

5 Must-Visit Attractions in Bukittinggi

1. Jam Gadang: The City’s Icon

  • Location: City center, near Pasar Atas
  • Hours: Open 24/7
  • Admission: Free

Standing 26 meters tall, Jam Gadang has been Bukittinggi’s landmark since 1926. One unique detail, its number four is written as “IIII” instead of the Roman numeral “IV.”

The clock was designed by a Minangkabau architect and uses the same mechanism as London’s Big Ben. Originally topped with a European-style roof, it now sports a design inspired by Minangkabau’s traditional houses.

While visitors can’t enter the tower, taking a photo with it as your backdrop is a must.

2. Ngarai Sianok: A Breathtaking Gorge

  • Location: Jalan Panorama, Bukittinggi
  • Best time to visit: 9 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Admission: Free

Picture yourself on a cliff, gazing at a lush green valley with a crystal-clear river running through it. That’s Ngarai Sianok. Stretching 15 kilometers with depths of around 100 meters, the gorge was formed by the Semangko fault, creating dramatic cliff walls.

It’s a favorite backdrop for films and music videos. Visitors can enjoy light trekking along pedestrian paths, cycling, or simply picnicking in the fresh air.

3. Lobang Jepang: WWII Underground Tunnels

  • Location: Jalan Panorama, Bukittinggi
  • Hours: 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Admission: Rp5,000–Rp20,000 per person

Built by Japanese forces in 1942, this 1.4-kilometer network of tunnels once served as a bunker, weapons storage, prison, and hiding place.

The tunnels are equipped with branching passages designed to confuse enemies. A local guide is recommended. They’ll lead the way and share stories about this haunting chapter in history.

4. Fort de Kock: A Glimpse Into the Colonial Era

  • Location: Jalan Yos Sudarso, Bukittinggi
  • Hours: 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Admission: Rp20,000–Rp25,000 per person

Perched atop Bukit Jirek, Fort de Kock was built in 1825 by Dutch forces during the Padri War. It offered a strategic vantage point over the surrounding area.

Although much of the fort has weathered over time, remnants of its walls and old cannons remain. A suspension bridge connects the fort to the Bukittinggi Zoo, a fun bonus for visitors.

5. Janjang Koto Gadang: Scenic Steps to the Village

  • Location: Near Ngarai Sianok, Bukittinggi
  • Best time to visit: 6 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Admission: Free (parking fees apply)

This one-kilometer staircase trail connects Bukittinggi with Koto Gadang village, surrounded by lush hills and valleys. Originally built for easier access between the city and the village, it’s now a favorite spot for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers.

Come early to catch the sunrise, or enjoy a relaxed walk while taking in the rural scenery.
