1. Museum Benteng Vredeburg

Located right at Yogyakarta’s kilometer-zero point, Benteng Vredeburg has stood as a silent witness to many pivotal events since the Dutch colonial era.

Originally built under the pretext of protecting the Sultan’s palace, the fort served as a vantage point for the Dutch to monitor its growth and activities.

During the 1 March 1949 General Offensive, Indonesian forces targeted Vredeburg as part of their push to reclaim the city from Dutch control.

Today, the museum houses over 7,000 historical items and themed dioramas, spanning from the Diponegoro War to the New Order period.

Just steps away from Malioboro Street, Vredeburg is open daily, with extended hours until 9 p.m. on weekends. Tickets range from Rp10,000 to Rp50,000.

Beyond its historical exhibits, the site also offers green open spaces, a guest house, café, playground, and nursing room, making it welcoming for visitors of all ages. At night, the fountain show turns it into one of Jogja’s charming evening attractions.

2. Museum Monumen Yogya Kembali (Monjali)

Monjali is instantly recognizable for its towering cone-shaped structure. In its courtyard, 40 relief panels depict scenes from Indonesia’s struggle for independence in Yogyakarta.

The monument was built to commemorate the withdrawal of Dutch forces and the restoration of Yogyakarta as the capital of the Republic.

Inside, four museum halls cover key events including the Proclamation of Independence, the guerrilla warfare era, the 1949 General Offensive, and Yogyakarta’s period as the national capital.

The second floor features 10 three-dimensional dioramas and an additional 40 reliefs, while the third floor’s Garbha Graha Room serves as a space for honoring fallen heroes.

Located on Jl. Ring Road Utara in Sleman, Monjali is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets priced at Rp15,000.

3. Museum Sandi

Tucked away on Jalan F.M. Noto No. 21 in the Kotabaru area, Museum Sandi is the only cryptology museum in Asia. It chronicles the origins of Indonesia’s code and cipher agency, established to secure confidential communications during the country’s formative years.

Spread across two floors, the museum features nine themed rooms, from the Independence era to global cryptography history.

Visitors can see original cipher books, locally and internationally made code machines, replicas of ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Persian encryption devices, as well as courier bicycles used for secure communication.

Best of all, admission is free. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with museum educators on hand to guide visitors through the exhibits.

4. Istana Kepresidenan Yogyakarta

Also known as Gedung Ageng or Gedung Agung, this presidential palace served as President Soekarno’s residence during the Indonesian Revolution between 1946 and 1949.

Today, it offers a glimpse into the nation’s leadership during those critical years, with collections ranging from archival photographs to historic meeting tables.

Visits are available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but must be arranged in advance through a formal request letter. Guided tours ensure visitors get the most out of the palace’s historical significance.
