Known as the City of a Thousand Rivers, Banjarmasin and its surroundings have endless unexposed tourism potential. As the capital of South Kalimantan Province, Banjarmasin and other cities nearby have become home to many unique and iconic destinations. Besides that, the culinary options you have when visiting the area are plenty.
Eager to visit Banjarmasin as your next travel destination? If so, we at TRAC have compiled a trip itinerary if you’re planning to visit the Banjarmasin for 2 days and 1 night.
Come early in the morning so you can explore areas around Banjarmasin. If you arrive by plane, then Syamsudin Noor International Airport will be the gateway to start your adventure in South Kalimantan. Drive south to Tanah Laut Regency where many eye-spoiling stops that will get you closer to nature are found.
First stop is Bajuin Falls, which is around two hours drive from the airport. These waterfalls may not be as high but it showcases an amazing view to behold. The combination between lush greeneries and storeyed waterfalls are definitely something you find on a daily basis, especially if you’re living in a big city.
After that you can continue your journey to Rimpi Pelaihari Hill. Many call this hill the New Zealand of Borneo or Teletubbies Hill. An overlay of green grass in those carpets these small hills would be very hard to miss. For the best view, you should come during the season transition, from monsoon to dry season.
For lunch, make a quick stop at PTP Lakeside Lesehan restaurant where you can relish in many kinds of South Kalimantanese food while sitting on the floor. No chair is the best chair! One of the must-try dishes in this place is Pangasius-catfish Gangan Soup. This special dish is served by cooking Pangasius-catfish with a yellow broth with a sour and fresh taste.
On the trip back to Banjarmasin, you can rest for a little bit at Pelaihari Maze Park. In this park, there are many rides that you can play on and make your way out of the beautiful maze.
As you arrive in Banjarmasin in the afternoon, point your map to the iconic Banjarmasin watchtower. From the top of the tower, you can savor the dazzling Banjarmasin from a height. To complete your first day, walk down the lane by Barito River at the crowded Siring area.
For dinner, don’t miss out on the infamous Lontong Orari. A portion of Lontong Orari will get you two slices of large triangle-shaped rice cake doused in the savory coconut milk broth. Don’t forget to round up your meal with the side dishes cooked with habang spices or red spices. You can choose the side dishes you prefer, but many diners opt for the chicken and egg. If you’re up for something new, don’t hesitate to grab a piece of iwak haruan bumbu habang or snakehead murrel fish which is the best seller in this joint.
It is said that you haven’t been to Banjarmasin if you did not make a stop at the floating market which has been the travel icon of Banjarmasin. Wake up really early just before the sun rises if you don’t want to miss this super iconic destination. Lok Baintan Floating Market only operates from 6 to 9 o’clock in the morning Central Indonesian Time. The exchange between buyers and sellers are done from the deck of wooden boats that’s typical of Banjarmasin. Fresh products like fruits and vegetables are traded here along with other kinds of daily groceries.
Finding a boat that will take you to the market won’t be difficult. Some operators will even offer you the whole river tour experience all the way to Kembang Island. This island is home to hundreds of monkeys that will remind you of one particular forest in Bali.
After venturing down the Barito River, it’s high time you replenish your energy and have a slurp of the infamous Soto Bang Amat. Bang Amat specializes in serving Soto Banjar. A portion of that would be enough of a recharge plus it gives you a boost in your flavor adventure. There are two unique menus in Soto Bang Amat namely soto and sop. Although they’re doused in the same broth, if you prefer to eat it with lontong rice cake, then it’s called soto. However, if you opt for a plate of rice, then the name will be sop or soup.
If you have spare time in your hands then you can make a brief stop at Martapura before returning to the airport. Intan Martapura Market is known as the center for precious stones and natural stones. In this market you will also find handicrafts and local snacks that you can bring home as souvenirs. Short on time and can’t make it to Martapura? Don’t worry, because there are many souvenir centers in downtown Banjarmasin. From Sasirangan Fabrics to fish crackers commonly called kuku macan or tiger’s nails can be yours to take home.
