Exploring Kalimantan's Forests through the Lens of 'Petualangan Sherina 2'

Have you had the chance to watch 'Petualangan Sherina 2'? Nearly 23 years after their first adventure, Sherina and Sadam have returned to the screen in this heartfelt sequel.

While their previous adventures took us through the scenic city of Bandung and its surroundings, this time around, the Miles Production House is set to transport audiences to the enchanting forests of Kalimantan.

'Petualangan Sherina 2', which debuted on Thursday, September 28, 2023, showcases vibrant scenes captured in Jakarta and primarily in Central Kalimantan.

Over a span of 46 days, the cast and crew embarked on a filming journey across various picturesque locales within Central Kalimantan, such as the forested areas of Tumbang Kaman Village and Tumbang Manggu Village in Katingan Regency.

Some scenes are also believed to have been filmed at the iconic Kahayan Bridge and the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Conservation Area in Palangka Raya City.

Although not all filming locations of 'Petualangan Sherina 2' are accessible to the general public, don’t worry! You can still channel the spirit of Sherina's adventures by exploring some of the accessible spots within Kalimantan's lush forests.

3 Destinations in Borneo Forest ala Sherina Adventure Movie 2

Nyaru Menteng Arboretum

At this locale, you'll find the Orangutan Rehabilitation and Conservation Center managed by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS). It's believed that this organization inspired producer Mira Lesmana for the setting of Sadam's workplace, whimsically named ‘Oukal’ or ‘Orangutan Kalimantan’, in the movie.

The Nyaru Menteng Arboretum is situated in Tumbang Tahai Village, Bukit Batu Palangkaraya District, Central Kalimantan, which is roughly a 40-minute drive from the heart of Palangka Raya City. This place serves not only as a "school" for orangutans but also features a campground and a forest teeming with a diverse array of flora and fauna.

Tourists can only explore the serene and shaded paths of the Nyaru Menteng Arboretum on weekends between 09:00 and 15:00. This limitation ensures the animals within have ample time and space undisturbed by human activities during the week.

Let go of any hopes to play with the orangutans, as they are not pets but protected animals. According to the official BOS website, this orangutan "school" doesn't entertain casual tourist visits. However, you can still drop by the information center to delve into the fascinating world of orangutans and their livelihood.

Sebangau National Park

A locale reminiscent of the scenic spots featured in 'Petualangan Sherina 2' is the Sebangau National Park. This national park spans across three administrative regions in Central Kalimantan—Palangka Raya City, Katingan Regency, and Pulang Pisau Regency.

Explore Sebangau National Park either by engaging a tourist agent or by obtaining an entry permit from the park's management if you prefer a self-guided exploration. The commonly used entrance is situated near Kereng Bangkirai Pier, a short 20-minute drive from the heart of Palangka Raya City.

Embark on a serene journey down the Sebangau River aboard a wooden boat, reliving scenes straight out of 'Petualangan Sherina 2'. Exercise caution during your adventure! With a bit of luck, you might encounter some of the rare and captivating wildlife that call this National Park home.

Tanjung Puting National Park

While Tanjung Puting National Park may be a bit of a detour from the filming locales of 'Petualangan Sherina 2', it's an awe-inspiring destination that's well worth a spot on your travel itinerary.

Unlike the previously mentioned sites closer to Palangka Raya City, this national park nestles within the West Kotawaringin Regency in Central Kalimantan Province.

You can reach it by taking a direct flight to Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun, the capital of West Kotawaringin Regency.

Tanjung Puting, renowned as an orangutan rehabilitation center, is also a haven for an array of wildlife including red monkeys, deer, sun bears, wild cats, and the distinct proboscis monkeys.

The park offers several intriguing spots to explore, such as the three orangutan centers—Tanjung Harapan, Pondok Tanggui, and the famed Camp Leakey. The natural vistas of Natai Lengkuas, Sungai Buluh, and Lake Burung are other highlights not to be missed.

For a full-fledged adventure, plan a longer stay to truly soak in the experiences Tanjung Puting has to offer. Imagine sailing leisurely along the Sekonyer River, resting under the stars on a wooden boat, and enjoying dinner amidst a magical display of fireflies twinkling around the river.

You have the choice to either craft your own exploration journey or join an open-trip group to traverse the wonders of Tanjung Puting.
