As we approach the International Day of Disabilities, celebrated every December 3 every year, TRAC will introduce you to some of the best disability-friendly destinations in Indonesia. Unlike tourist attractions in general, disability-friendly places have certain criteria to make sure they can accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities, especially wheelchair users.
Although there are not many tourist attractions in Indonesia that are labeled as disability-friendly, many emerging tourist attractions are starting to realize the importance of inclusivity, thus, creating access for persons with disabilities, especially wheelchair users. Here are some wheelchair-friendly tourist attractions you can visit.
The National Museum, also known as the Elephant Museum, has thousands of collections related to Indonesian and world history. Located on Jalan Merdeka Barat, Jakarta, this museum is one of the largest museums in Indonesia with a fairly high level of visits. For wheelchair users, this National Museum has been equipped with a sloping ramp and lift facilities to change floors.
As a disability-friendly museum, the National Museum does not only try to accommodate the needs of disabled wheelchair users, but there are also facilities aimed at the blind. Several museum collections have been equipped with explanations using braille that the blind can read by touching.
Finding disabled-friendly outdoor attractions is not an easy matter. But don't worry Jakartans for Tebet Eco Park is now open to the public. Here, you can choose to simply enjoy the fresh air in the middle of Jakarta or take a stroll around the park. The sloping paths are wide enough to allow wheelchair users to move freely in this park.
Don't miss out on enjoying the park from the Infinity link bridge, a 6 meter high bridge that will give you the experience of walking through the park. Tebet Eco Park also provides various other facilities that you can use for free, such as: a children's playground, thematic parks, and several other facilities.
Since it’s fairly new, Jakartans are still quite enthusiastic about this place and Tebet Eco Park will undoubtedly be crowded on weekends. If you plan to come here, it's best to choose a time in the morning. Because the conditions are still quite quiet and you can more freely play around there.
If you’re traveling to Bandung, don’t miss out this destination which is located not far from Maribaya Lodge. Yes, Fairy Garden. Here, you into a fairytale-style atmosphere, complete with beautiful castles. Prepare your camera to take selfies because the scenery here is too good to pass up.
For those of you who use wheelchairs or who are planning to go on vacation with friends or family with disabilities, there is a special gate here that will make it easier to enter. Apart from that, there are also special toilets for the disabled and a special ramp for wheelchair users. With the facilities Fairy Garden has, this fairy land becomes a friendly place for all and of course, inclusive.
Located at the far end of the never-not-crowded Jalan Malioboro, Vredeburg Fort Museum is one of the most famous tourist destinations for travelers coming to Yogyakarta. Vredeburg Fort is home to many historical chronicles of Yogyakarta which you can see inside the museum.
This museum is equipped with special access that makes it easier for wheelchair users to get around the museum and see hundreds of existing dioramas. In addition, the museum also provides wheelchairs for visitors to borrow.
Hundreds of vehicle collections neatly displayed at the Transportation Museum located in Batu City, about 1 hour’s drive from the center of Malang City. Museum Angkut is located on an area of 3.8 hectares and is home to at least 300 collections spread throughout the museum and arranged based on certain themes and zones.
Don’t worry about getting troubled exploring each zone because the paths and roads in the museum are accessible by wheelchairs. The staff are also there at your service if needed. Not only that, Museum Angkut also provides free wheelchairs you can use to get around.
Apart from the 5 tourist attractions above, there are actually several other disability-friendly places you can visit.
