A trip to Yogyakarta wouldn’t be complete without tasting its most iconic snack: bakpia. These small, round pastries filled with mung bean paste have become a beloved treat across generations and a must-have souvenir when visiting Jogja.
Bakpia originally came from China, where it was typically filled with pork and served alongside sticky rice cakes during Lunar New Year celebrations.
But when Chinese traders brought it to Yogyakarta in the 1940s, they swapped the pork for mung beans to respect the region’s predominantly Muslim community. Over time, bakpia evolved into a culinary symbol of Jogja.
Today, the bakpia scene is more vibrant than ever. While classic fillings like mung bean and black mung bean still hold strong, you’ll now find exciting flavors like purple yam, durian, pineapple, milk, chocolate, cheese, and even green tea.
Arguably the most legendary brand of them all, Bakpia Pathok 25 is the name you’ll see on souvenir boxes everywhere. As one of the pioneers of Jogja-style bakpia, this brand began with a single flavor: mung bean.
Today, it offers over 10 different fillings with options for moist or dry pastry skins, plus original and premium selections.
Each box includes 15 pieces and ranges from IDR 35,000 to IDR 50,000. You can try free samples at their official stores to help you decide. Mung bean remains their best-seller.
They currently operate 8 official outlets. For a peek behind the scenes, head to their main production site at Pabrik Jaya, Sanggrahan Pathuk NG I/504, Ngampilan, Yogyakarta. They are open daily from 6 AM to midnight.
This one’s a cult favorite. Fans rave about its thin skin, rich and gooey filling, and perfectly balanced sweetness. Once you try Bakpia Kemusuk, it’s hard to go back.
Made without preservatives, these pastries have a short shelf life, 3–4 days at room temp, 5–6 days in the fridge, or up to a week in the freezer.
There’s only one place to get them: Kemusuk Kidul, Argomulyo, Sedayu, Bantul. A 20-piece box costs IDR 41,000 and comes exclusively in mung bean. Pre-order 1–2 days in advance via WhatsApp at 0856-4318-2673.
Bakpia Kurnia Sari is known for shaking up tradition with creative fillings. Their signature flavors include tiramisu, coffee, edam cheese, chocolate cashew, and milk durian.
A box of 15 pieces is priced between IDR 50,000–65,000. You’ll find 10 official outlets across Jogja, one of the most popular is at Jl. Kusumanegara No. 5 in Banguntapan, just a short hop from Gembira Loka Zoo.
Small but mighty, Bakpia Merlino is perfect for those who want bite-sized indulgence. These compact bakpia are packed with soft, flavorful filling. Available in both moist and dry versions, with various flavor options, the largest box includes up to 20 pieces.
Their red packaging adds a premium touch, great for gifting. You can grab a box at either of their two official stores, including one at Jl. RE Martadinata No. 24B, Wirobrajan. Open daily from 7 AM to 8 PM. Don’t miss their green tea flavor!
If variety’s your thing, Juwara Satoe leads the pack. With the most flavor options on this list, they offer everything from pandan, salted mung bean, savory mung bean, and pineapple tart to black sesame, chili, KitKat, and dates. Flavors you won’t find anywhere else.
Their 26 outlets make them one of the most accessible brands in Jogja. Packaging options range from 5 to 24 pieces per box, with prices starting as low as IDR 10,000. Our pick? Try the 24-piece Bakpia Mix (IDR 45,000) to sample multiple flavors in one go.
For late-night shopping, head to the Tugu PAL outlet on Jl. Jendral Sudirman No. 16, Jetis. It’s open from 7 AM to midnight on weekdays, and until 1 AM on weekends, so there’s really no excuse to leave Jogja without your souvenir fix.
Yogyakarta isn’t just a city of culture, it’s also a culinary playground. From heritage eats to modern takes on local flavors, every corner offers something worth trying.
