Solo, also known as Surakarta, is famous for its rich traditional culture and distinctive Javanese atmosphere. Yet, beyond its historical charm, the city is evolving into a creative hub, particularly with the emergence of Lokananta Bloc.
Established in 1956, Lokananta was Indonesia’s first and largest recording company during the 1970s and 1980s. Today, the Lokananta building has been reimagined as Lokananta Bloc, a vibrant creative space for young people in Surakarta and Central Java.
This transformation adds an exciting destination to Solo’s attractions. Curious about what makes Lokananta Bloc so special? Let’s dive into the details.
Lokananta Bloc is situated in what was once the first state-owned vinyl record factory, located on Jalan Ahmad Yani No. 389, Laweyan District, Surakarta City, Central Java. Activities at this historic site ceased in the 2000s, but the Solo City Government initiated its revitalization in 2022.
Opening its doors to the public in June 2023, Lokananta Bloc hosts a collection of tenants led by creative young individuals and includes an amphitheater that frequently hosts various events, particularly music performances.
With Lokananta Bloc’s revival, the Lokananta Recording Studio is back in operation, now equipped with advanced digital recording technology. At the far end, you’ll find the Lokananta Gallery. Be sure to visit!
Lokananta Bloc is divided into two main areas: the tenant zone, which includes various shops and an amphitheater, and the Lokananta Gallery, which showcases the rich history of Indonesia’s recording industry.
The tenant areas in Lokananta Bloc generally operate from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, while the Lokananta Gallery is open until 8:00 PM. Plan your visit accordingly to enjoy everything this vibrant spot offers!
From the roadside, you can spot several culinary venues in Lokananta Bloc, including Bakmi Sedjuk, Filosofi Kopi, Sawahita, Honky Tonk Pizza Bar, Sanzi Claypot, and Hawkers Chicken Steak.
If you’re just in the mood for a snack, stop by the Mini Bloc Market, which sells a variety of locally produced packaged culinary treats.
Lokananta Bloc offers more than just food. It also houses creative spaces like Aloospace and the Saafleur flower shop. Need a haircut? Head over to Johnny Blast for a fresh trim.
For music lovers, the Lokananta Record Store is a must-visit. Here, you can find both the latest releases and classic vinyl records and cassettes. The store often hosts music events and talks, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of Lokananta Bloc.
No visit to Lokananta is complete without a stop at the Lokananta Gallery. To ensure you can join a guided tour, it’s best to book your entrance ticket in advance.
Tickets for the Lokananta Gallery are priced at IDR 25,000 for students, university students, and senior citizens over 60 years old, while regular tickets cost IDR 35,000.
There are five tour sessions available each day, and you can make new reservations on the same day via the link on Lokananta’s official Instagram page.
The Lokananta Gallery features eight themed areas, including the gamelan room, discography room, and Bengawan Solo room. Each room tells a unique story, so taking a guided tour is highly recommended to gain deeper insights.
After exploring the gallery, you’ll return to the main lobby where the Lokananta Shop awaits. Here, you can purchase various souvenirs, books, and old releases from this iconic record company.
A t-shirt with the Lokananta logo or typography is a perfect keepsake, symbolizing your visit to this remarkable place.
