Yogyakarta, often celebrated as the city of education and culture, also pulses with a vibrant artistic spirit. This is especially evident in Artjog 2024, one of Indonesia’s largest and longest-running contemporary art festivals.
For art lovers, a trip to Yogyakarta wouldn’t be complete without experiencing this event. Artjog 2024 showcases a wide array of fine art over more than two months, featuring interactive installations that enrich the visitor’s experience.
Curious about what Artjog 2024 has in store? TRAC has gathered all the essential details about this fantastic event. Remember, you can’t truly call yourself an art enthusiast if you skip Artjog 2024!
Artjog began its journey as Jogja Art Fair in 2008, initially as a part of the Yogyakarta Arts Festival. By 2009, the second Jogja Art Fair was held independently from the festival. It wasn’t until 2010 that the event adopted the name ‘Artjog’ for its third iteration.
Since its inception, Artjog has consistently showcased exhibitions every year. Even in 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the event persisted, transitioning to an online format to continue bringing art to the public.
Artjog 2024 will take place from June 28 to September 1, 2024, at the Jogja National Museum, now known as JNM Bloc. Since 2016, this venue has been the “home” of Artjog, with the event previously held at the Yogyakarta Cultural Park.
Following the grand opening on June 28, Artjog 2024 will be open daily from Monday to Sunday, operating from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. To fully enjoy the exhibition, be sure to arrive well before closing time so you can explore every corner at your leisure.
You can purchase Artjog tickets either online through the official website or directly at the venue. There are two types of entrance tickets available: adult tickets priced at IDR 75,000 and child tickets (for ages 6-15) priced at IDR 50,000. Children under 6 years old can enter for free.
Online ticket sales are only available for adult tickets. If you need to buy a child ticket, you’ll need to do so in person at the counter in front of the venue. When you purchase tickets online, you will receive an e-ticket in the form of a QR code sent to the email address you provided during the transaction.
As in previous years, Artjog 2024 features its own distinctive theme. This year’s theme, Motif: Ramalan (Prophecy), will be brought to life by dozens of artists through hundreds of captivating artworks.
Artjog 2024 boasts contributions from at least 48 individual adult artists and groups, both domestic and international, along with 36 child and adolescent artists. Each piece promises to captivate and inspire with its unique beauty and profound creativity.
One installation you must not miss is “Suara Keheningan” by Agus Suwage and Titarubi. This intricate installation features human ear sculptures surrounded by various types of rice, accompanied by recorded prayers, proverbs, and praises from indigenous groups.
These recordings can be heard through the ears in several rooms, offering an immersive auditory and visual experience.
A trip to Artjog wouldn’t be complete without capturing your experience in photos. Wear a stylish yet comfortable outfit to look your best on camera.
Feel free to mix traditional attire with everyday clothes for a unique look. Alternatively, you can purchase and wear official Artjog merchandise available at the event.
Remember to follow the rules while at Artjog. Maintain a safe distance from the artworks, as touching is not allowed unless specifically permitted or there are special instructions provided.
If you have any cumbersome luggage, you can store it in available lockers. Note that pets are not allowed inside the exhibition space. Additionally, smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited in the exhibition areas.
To make the most of your visit, consider enjoying some local Yogyakarta cuisine before exploring Artjog. This way, you can fully immerse yourself in the art without any distractions.
