In mid-November, Bali fascinated the world as the Island of the Gods was chosen for the location of an international economic cooperation forum. High-ranking officials from 20 major countries worldwide attended this event.
From Joe Biden, the president of the United States (US), to the Chinese president, Xi Jinping; they showed up to spark this grand event.
For more than a week, many discussions emerged regarding a series of activities at the G20 Summit. One of the most monumental occasions was when President Joko Widodo entertained his guests by holding a welcoming dinner in the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK).
Generally, the GWK is a cultural tourism park displaying countless original Balinese cultural heritage. This area is quite popular since they exhibit the giant statue of Garuda Wisnu Kencana.
The GWK statue is a creation of a Balinese artist, Nyoman Nuarta, who started its construction in 1990.
If you plan a holiday trip to Bali by the holiday season, you must include GWK Bali in your destination list. To get a more thorough picture of GWK Bali, let us look at the following information describing this 240-hectare cultural area.
You can visit the GWK in Ungasan Village, South Kuta, Bali. This area is approximately only 40 kilometers from Denpasar.
This iconic area is acclaimed as the mascot of Bali, the island of the gods, as it displays a magnificent statue depicting the figure of Lord Vishnu riding a garuda.
The GWK statue is towering with its 121 meters tall and has been announced as the second tallest statue in the world, beating the 93-meter statue of Liberty in the United States.
Vishnu Plaza is the first location you will encounter as you walk into the GWK area. By the Vishnu Plaza, you will find a half-body statue of Lord Vishnu soaring as high as 23 meters. This area is the highest point in the GWK. You can appreciate the beautiful scenery of Bali from here.
For your further reference, the GWK area is built 263 meters above sea level. Hence, as you turn your head, you will only see the expanse of the mesmerizing creation of Mother Nature. One saying said that “Bali was created when God was smiling,” and you can prove it by standing on this point.
Inside the area of GWK, one specific location is believed to be an eternal spring. The local people acknowledge it as Puri Somaka Giri. They claim that the stream was materialized long ago, even before they built the GWK tourist area. Puri Somaka Giri is considered sacred by the Balinese.
Some say this spring has never dried out, even in the summer and dry seasons. Due to this phenomenon, the fountain is considered holy by many people. Different rumors circulate, saying one’s wishes will come true if they take the water from Puri Somaka Giri.
President Joko Widodo held a dinner with the G20 summit officials in Lotus Pond. This venue is the largest outdoor area in the area of GWK.
Large chunks of limestone lined up on each side, creating a secluded illusion of Lotus Pond, and it was ready to be transformed into an exclusive area holding large-scale events.
It is not surprising, since Lotus Pond has often become the place of Bali’s art and cultural activities, from music, dance, and orchestra to fashion performances. Considering the size of Lotus Pond, this area can accommodate up to 7,500 spectators during performances.
