Retracing Heroes’ Day in Surabaya: A Journey Through Indonesia’s Historic Legacy

A Brief History of November 10th Heroes' Day

Each year on November 10, Indonesia celebrates Heroes’ Day, a tribute to those who gave their lives in the struggle for independence. Surabaya is at the heart of this commemoration, as it was a crucial battleground in the fight against foreign invaders.

Surabaya stands as a testament to one of Indonesia’s most pivotal battles: The Battle of November 10. Following Indonesia’s independence proclamation on August 17, 1945, Dutch forces attempted to reassert control, only to face fierce resistance from Indonesian fighters.

The conflict erupted after the death of Brigadier General Mallaby, the British commander in East Java, on October 30, 1945.

His vehicle encountered a group of Indonesian fighters near Jembatan Merah (Red Bridge) in Surabaya, leading to an unavoidable clash. The clash was inevitable and left Mallaby shot dead in his car.

The peak of these confrontations on Saturday, November 10, 1945, saw thousands of Indonesians sacrificing their lives in the struggle for freedom.

Exploring Historic Surabaya for Heroes’ Day

This year, Heroes’ Day falls on Sunday, November 10, 2024, providing a perfect opportunity to explore Surabaya’s historic sites while paying homage to the nation’s heroes. Here are some recommendations.

Heroes’ Monument and the Tenth of November Museum

The iconic Heroes’ Monument is an essential stop for anyone commemorating Heroes’ Day. Standing 40.5 meters tall, this “inverted nail” design symbolizes the resilience of those who fought in the November 10 battle.

Adjacent to the monument is the Sepuluh November Museum, home to artifacts, photographs, and weapons from that historic conflict. The museum’s dioramas, both static and electronic, offer vivid glimpses into the events of the battle.

The Sepuluh November Museum welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with an entry fee of just IDR 8,000.

Red Bridge (Jembatan Merah)

The Red Bridge, or Jembatan Merah, holds a special place in Surabaya’s history. The site of Brigadier General Mallaby’s death, it became a catalyst for the fierce November 10 battle.

Originally built as a wooden drawbridge in 1784, the bridge was reconstructed in iron in 1878 and has since been known as Jembatan Merah, or the “Red Bridge” due to its distinct red color.

Nearby, you can explore other cultural sites like History Park, the Hong Tiek Hian Temple, Pabean Market, and the House of Sampoerna Museum.

Surabaya’s historic sites offer a unique opportunity to reflect on Indonesia’s fight for freedom and gain a deeper appreciation of its resilient spirit. Let this Heroes’ Day be an inspiring journey into the heart of Indonesia’s storied past.

Majapahit Hotel (Formerly Yamato Hotel)

You may have heard of the famous flag-tearing incident where Indonesians transformed the red-white-blue Dutch flag into the red-and-white Indonesian flag. This defining moment took place at the Yamato Hotel, now known as the Majapahit Hotel.

Originally called the Oranje Hotel during the Dutch colonial era, this historic event is often associated with Heroes’ Day, though it actually occurred on September 19, 1945.

Majapahit Hotel, located on Jalan Tunjungan, is a must-visit landmark with architecture that captures the grandeur of its past.

Snap photos in front of this beautiful building or enjoy the on-site café and restaurant. For a richer experience, consider staying a night or two at this legendary hotel and immerse yourself in its storied ambiance.

SIOLA Building – Surabaya Museum

At the intersection of Jalan Tunjungan and Jalan Genteng Kali, you’ll find the historic SIOLA Building, an emblem of Surabaya’s resilience and a former trading hub.

Initially a bustling shopping center in 1877 known as “Whiteaway Laidlaw,” it later became a gathering place for the Dutch elite. Renamed Chiyoda under Japanese occupation, the building sold goods like bags and shoes before being abandoned post-independence.

In the 1950s, the Indonesian government nationalized it, and by 1964, five local entrepreneurs revived the SIOLA name.

Today, the SIOLA Building has been beautifully restored as the Surabaya City Museum and public service center.

Admission is free, and visitors can view exhibits on Surabaya’s social and cultural heritage. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Events Honoring Heroes’ Day in Surabaya

Each year, Surabaya hosts a variety of events to honor Heroes’ Day. The month kicks off with the Surabaya Juang Parade, which draws nearly 2,000 participants in a spirited display of pride and historical homage.

This year’s Heroes’ Day also includes the Surabaya Heroes Virtue 2.0 Exhibition: In The Light of Our Heroes, running from November 1-10 at Balai Pemuda Square.

This exhibit brings to life the struggles of Surabaya’s youth during the 1945 battle through modern media.

Additionally, the Old Town Week in Surabaya’s historic district features discussions on architecture and live murals, perfect for history buffs and art lovers alike.
