The Allure of Wonosobo: From the Biawak Monument to the Magic of Dieng

13 Mei 2025

Wonosobo, a highland gem in Central Java, has found itself in the spotlight lately, thanks to a striking new monument that’s gone viral on social media. Meet the Tugu Biawak, a bold and unexpected addition to the local landscape that’s turning heads for all the right reasons.

Crafted by local artist Ridjo Haryanto and funded with just Rp50 million from village development funds, this giant monitor lizard statue is impressively lifelike, down to the scale-like texture of its skin. Located in Tawangsari, Krasak Village, Selomerto District, the monument was completed in only a month and a half.

The buzz? Netizens are comparing the Tugu Biawak to other regional monuments with much heftier price tags and saying this one’s better.

The result: an internet sensation and a fresh photo stop for visitors passing through Wonosobo. Street vendors have started popping up nearby, adding to the liveliness of the area.
