Taking care of your car isn’t just about washing it or topping off the gas. If you want every trip to stay smooth, safe, and worry-free, then routine maintenance is non-negotiable.
One thing many drivers overlook? Spare parts have an expiration date. Ignoring them or delaying replacements can lead to bigger issues, like weaker performance, poor fuel efficiency, or even safety risks on the road.
Every car part has its moment. To keep your ride running smoothly, here’s a quick guide to the most important components and when you should think about replacing them:
The air filter keeps dust and debris from entering the combustion chamber. When it gets clogged, your engine has to work harder and that means more fuel gets burned.
On average, you should replace the air filter every 15,000 to 20,000 km. Some high-quality filters can stretch up to 40,000 km, but it’s always best to confirm with a mechanic at an authorized service center.
The oil filter keeps your engine oil clean by trapping metal particles and grime. Typically, it should be replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 km or every 6 months, depending on your car and oil type.
Replace it sooner if you notice signs like reduced performance, strange engine noises, or rising fuel consumption.
Worn-out spark plugs can make your engine hard to start and cause a drop in power. Standard spark plugs usually last around 20,000 km, while iridium types can go up to 50,000 km. Even if your car isn’t driven often, it’s a good idea to swap out spark plugs at least once a year.
Your brakes are your car’s most important safety feature. If you hear squeaking or feel the brakes aren’t as responsive, don’t wait. Brake pads typically need to be replaced between 40,000 and 80,000 km, depending on how and where you drive.
Most car batteries start losing their punch after 2 years. If your car struggles to start or the dashboard lights dim unexpectedly, your battery might be nearing its end.
Regular battery checks, especially if you use a wet battery, and warming up your car can help extend its lifespan.
The timing belt keeps your engine’s components moving in sync. If it snaps mid-drive, it can cause serious engine damage. No issues? Still, replace it around 80,000 to 120,000 km, and inspect it at least every 40,000 to 60,000 km just to be safe.
Radiators can last 10 to 15 years, but don’t take that for granted. Corrosion and scaling can cause leaks or overheating. Make radiator and hose checks part of your regular maintenance routine.
Rubber components like bushing arms, engine mounts, and even wiper blades degrade over time. Once they hit the 5-year mark, it’s smart to inspect them regularly and replace any that are hardening or cracking.
Tires might look fine, but they come with an expiration date. While the maximum age is 10 years from the date of manufacture (check the sidewall code), most experts recommend replacing them every 3 to 5 years or sooner if you notice wear, cracks, or lifted tread. Don’t forget to inspect the spare tire too.
Delaying spare part replacements can cost you more than just money, it can also compromise your safety. Take brake pads, for example.
Replacing them late can damage the discs, doubling your repair bill. And if the timing belt snaps while you’re driving? That could lead to a full engine breakdown.
