Every year, millions of Indonesians embark on mudik, the annual homecoming tradition where families travel back to their hometowns to celebrate Eid. But the long drive, especially by private or rental car, can be exhausting. That’s why knowing where to find the nearest rest area is essential for a safe and comfortable journey.
Rest Areas, also known as Rest and Service Areas (TIP), provide much-needed stops along major highways, offering amenities such as restrooms, prayer rooms, dining options, gas stations, and SPKLU charging stations.
Beyond just a place to stretch your legs, rest areas are perfect for refueling, both your vehicle and yourself. before getting back on the road.
If you’re traveling along the Trans-Java Toll Road, you’ll find more than 70 rest areas strategically located in both westbound and eastbound directions.
These rest areas are categorized into Type A, B, and C, depending on the facilities available. Type A rest areas offer the most complete services, including workshops and medical facilities, making them the best choice for a more comfortable stop.
The simplest way to find a nearby rest area is through Google Search or Google Maps. Just type “nearest rest area” into the search bar, and you’ll get a list of available locations in your area.
If you’re using Google Assistant, it will typically redirect you to Google Maps for navigation. Before heading to a rest area, double-check that it’s located along your planned route to avoid unnecessary detours.
Beyond Google Maps, you can also rely on other navigation apps like Waze or HERE WeGo for similar results.
Each year, Indonesia’s Directorate General of Highways (Bina Marga) provides real-time updates for homecoming travelers. If you want to find rest areas along toll roads or monitor conditions on non-toll routes, visit their official website: https://binamarga.pu.go.id/mudik.
For a more detailed search, try TRAVOY, an app developed by Jasa Marga. After downloading and logging in, you can check the exact location of rest areas along your route and view detailed facility information, including gas stations, restrooms, prayer rooms, restaurants, and shops.
TRAVOY is especially useful for frequent toll road travelers, as it also provides real-time updates on traffic disruptions, road maintenance, and engineering changes that may affect your journey.
Another option is the Tol Kita app, developed by the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT). Simply install the app, open it, and select the “Rest Area” feature to find nearby stops. You can also monitor real-time toll road conditions for a smoother trip.
Social media can be a great source of real-time travel tips from fellow travelers. Joining mudik community groups online or following official toll road operator accounts can help you stay informed about which rest areas are less crowded, which stops have the best facilities, and any unexpected road delays.
Long drives can be exhausting, especially during homecoming season. To stay focused and safe, remember to take a break every four hours and avoid driving when you’re feeling drowsy.
Stop at a well-equipped rest area to stretch, recharge, and refuel, ensuring a smoother journey all the way to your destination.
