In recent years, automatic cars have gained more popularity due to heavier traffic. Automatic transmission is believed to be a solution to increased traffic congestion.
Now, almost all newly-launched cars use automatic transmission. However, many people do not know that there are various types of transmissions in automatic cars.
At least, automatic cars in Indonesia use 4 types of transmission. They include conventional AT (Hydraulic Automatic Transmission), Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT), Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), and Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). Continue reading to find out more.
This transmission uses its torque converter to change mechanical power from the engine into kinetic energy and transmit it to the driveshaft.
This is the most common transmission in automatic cars throughout Indonesia, such as popular MPVs, Toyota Avanza, and Daihatsu Xenia.
In CVT, gears are shifted due to the changing diameters of two pulleys, i.e., the drive pulley and the driven pulley. Then, as the engine rotates, they are connected to the steel belt.
To some extent, CVT is better than AT because it allows smoother and more comfortable shifts of gear. In addition, due to the continuously changing gear ratio, CVT can make the engine more responsive and efficient.
Automatic cars with CVT are said to be more fuel-efficient. This type of transmission is used in city cars and hatchbacks, such as Toyota Yaris, Honda Brio, Honda Jazz, etc.
DCT is manual transmission using an automatic clutch, instead of a clutch pedal. It is also called automated manual transmission.
This transmission uses dual clutches controlled by the computer system. Those clutches are separated for odd and even gears.
The system detects what the driver needs, allowing smoother and more precise changes of gear.
This is a manual transmission with an automatic actuator to operate the clutch and change gears.
This transmission has not commonly been used in cars. One of the cars using it is Suzuki Ignis.
Most of the cars in Indonesia use conventional AT and CVT. As long as you maintain an automatic transmission based on the manufacturer’s manual, it remains as good as a manual transmission.
