Perched on Java’s easternmost tip, Banyuwangi is a destination brimming with hidden gems waiting to be uncovered. If you’re planning a road trip to Bali, consider taking a scenic detour to discover the enchanting sights of Banyuwangi.

The largest regency on the island of Java, "The Sunrise of Java ” covers an area of 5,782 and holds potential for natural, cultural and historical tourism. From beaches, mountains, waterfalls, to unique local traditions.

Recently, Banyuwangi hosted the Gandrung Sewu Festival, an annual spectacle featuring thousands of Gandrung dancers performing along the shores of Boom Beach. This festival has quickly become a major draw for those interested in experiencing authentic Javanese culture.

Curious about what tours can be explored in Bumi Blambangan? Here are some recommendations.

10 Banyuwangi Tours, Suitable for End of Year Road Trip

Ijen Crater

One of Banyuwangi’s most famous spots, Ijen Crater, captivates visitors with its mesmerizing “blue fire” phenomenon—a rare, electric-blue flame visible only before dawn. Most visitors start their ascent in the early hours, around 1 or 2 a.m., to witness this magical sight.

Standing at 2,769 meters above sea level, Ijen Crater is a demanding 2-3 hour trek in cool mountain temperatures. Be prepared with a warm jacket and essentials for the hike.

For an additional experience, you can observe local sulfur miners as they work to collect sulfur from the crater. A gas mask is highly recommended to guard against the sulfurous fumes.

Baluran National Park

Though located mainly in Situbondo, Baluran National Park is easier to reach from Banyuwangi and is often visited in tandem. Known as “Little Africa in Java” for its savanna-like landscape, the park offers sightings of buffalo, deer, peacocks, and other wildlife.

The highlight of Baluran is Savana Bekol, a sprawling grassland framed by Mount Baluran, along with Bama Beach, a snorkeling hotspot with vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish.

Entrance fees are affordable, at IDR 21,000 on weekdays and IDR 31,000 on holidays, plus an IDR 10,000 vehicle fee.

De Djawatan Forest

This enchanting forest, filled with towering, centuries-old rain trees, is often likened to the mythical Fangorn Forest from The Lord of the Rings.

Located in Benculuk, around 30 km from Banyuwangi’s city center, De Djawatan offers the perfect setting for photography and serene nature walks.

Visitors can explore the forest by renting a bicycle or even opting for a horse-drawn carriage, adding a unique touch to the experience and creating memorable photo opportunities.

Pulau Merah Beach

On Banyuwangi’s southern coast, Pulau Merah Beach is famous for its striking red sunsets, created by sunlight reflecting off the reddish soil of a nearby 200-meter-high hill. November to February offers the best conditions to enjoy this phenomenon.

Pulau Merah Beach also attracts surfers with its large waves. If swimming is more your style, coordinate with local lifeguards for safety tips.

Wedi Ireng Beach

Wedi Ireng Beach is a hidden gem that has yet to draw large tourist crowds, leaving its natural beauty pristine and well-preserved.

Named after the Javanese phrase for “black sand,” Wedi Ireng is unique with its mix of white and black sand, offering a picturesque coastline. Here, you can snorkel, fish, or simply relax along the shore.

Getting to this beach requires a bit of an adventure, as you’ll need to trek through plantation areas or take a boat from Mustika Beach.

Alas Purwo National Park and Plengkung Beach (G-Land)

As one of Java’s oldest forests, Alas Purwo National Park has been a nature reserve since 1920, boasting a diverse ecosystem with animals like banteng, deer, wild boar, and rare bird species.

Spanning over 43,000 hectares, the park features dense rainforest, grasslands, and mangrove swamps. A popular destination within the park is Plengkung Beach, also known as G-Land, a paradise for surfers from around the globe.

With powerful waves facing the Indian Ocean, Plengkung ranks among the world’s top surfing spots. Beyond surfing, visitors can soak in the view of untouched tropical forests.

Meru Betiri National Park and Teluk Hijau Beach

Meru Betiri National Park, located in Pesanggaran District, is another sanctuary of natural splendor. The park’s Sukamade Beach serves as a turtle conservation site where visitors can witness turtle breeding and even participate in releasing hatchlings—a rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts.

The nearby Teluk Hijau (Green Bay) is another highlight, known for its stunning white sand and vibrant green waters. Access to Teluk Hijau may be challenging, but the serene views of lush forests and calm seas make the journey worthwhile.

Jagir Waterfall

Dubbed the “triplet waterfall,” Jagir Waterfall is a scenic destination in Kampung Anyar, known for its three cascading flows. With water sourced from mountain springs, the falls are surrounded by lush greenery, making it a refreshing spot for families.

Other nearby waterfalls include the 60-meter-tall Lider Waterfall, Kalibendo Waterfall surrounded by coffee and clove plantations, and Kembar Arum Waterfall, featuring a crystal-clear natural pool.

Boom Marina Beach

Located conveniently near the city center, Boom Marina Beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or simply relaxing by the sea. This family-friendly beach has ample facilities, including parking, food stalls, and shaded areas.

It’s also a popular venue for local events, such as the Gandrung Sewu festival, and offers various water sports opportunities.

Osing Kemiren Tourism Village

Immerse yourself in Osing culture at Kemiren Village, where you can learn about the region’s unique traditions. Experience the Gandrung dance, Angklung Paglak music, and the Barong Ider Bumi ritual firsthand.

Sample local delicacies like Sego Tempong and Pecel Pitik, and visit traditional Osing houses to better understand Banyuwangi’s rich heritage.

This village, with its serene atmosphere and deep cultural roots, offers a refreshing escape for travelers looking to experience village life and the natural beauty of Banyuwangi.
