Balikpapan may not often make headlines as a top tourist destination, but this city has much more to offer than meets the eye. Known primarily as an industrial and business hub in the Kalimantan region, Balikpapan is home to several mining and oil companies, including some major international players.
Located along the east coast of Kalimantan, Balikpapan has rapidly developed into an important destination for business professionals. Yet, beyond the city’s fast-paced business scene, there are hidden gems waiting to be explored, rich cultural experiences, and breathtaking natural beauty.
If you frequently travel to Balikpapan or are visiting for the first time, make sure to spare some time to explore. From scenic beaches and lush parks to the flavors of local delicacies, there’s plenty to experience.
Whether you’re here for a short business trip or plan to extend your stay, you’ll find something to enjoy. Let’s dive into some must-see spots that will add a little color to your business trip.
Kilang Mandiri Beach is one of Balikpapan’s hidden gems, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the city’s business buzz. Conveniently located along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, this beach is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the stunning sea views.
Whether you’re relaxing on a bean bag or soaking in the fresh sea breeze, Kilang Mandiri offers a serene escape from the demands of business travel.
Along the same coastline, you’ll find other picturesque beaches, such as Kemala Beach and Pantai Monpera (Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat, or People’s Struggle Monument). Not far from Semayang Port, Melawai Beach is another great option for a quick getaway.
Located along Jalan Sudirman in Klandasan Ulu, Bekapai Park is one of Balikpapan’s most well-known landmarks. A favorite gathering spot for locals of all ages, from the young to the elderly, the park offers a relaxing space to unwind and enjoy some leisure time.
At the heart of the park stands an abstract bronze monument, surrounded by a fountain that adds a refreshing vibe to the area. When evening falls, the fountain becomes even more mesmerizing with stunning lighting effects, creating a beautiful night time atmosphere.
Shaded by lush trees, the park provides a cool and comfortable place to sit, with plenty of benches to relax and take in the fresh air. You’ll also find numerous food and beverage vendors around the park—perfect for sampling some of Balikpapan’s local snacks.
Despite its name: Kebun Sayur, which means “veggies garden,” this market isn’t particularly a marketplace for fresh vegetables.
Instead, it’s a well-known market for a variety of handicrafts featuring traditional Kalimantan motifs, making it an ideal place to find souvenirs for colleagues or family.
You’ll discover beaded wallets starting at just a few tens of thousands of rupiah, along with a wide selection of sarongs and traditional woven fabrics, all available at reasonable prices.
If you’re looking to escape the bustling city center, take a short trip to the outskirts of Balikpapan. About an hour’s drive from downtown, near the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll gate, you’ll find several scenic beach options, including Lamaru Beach, Manggar Beach, and Tanjung Bayur Beach.
Not far from this row of beaches lies Lake Cermin Lamaru, known for its calm, crystal-clear waters that reflect like a mirror. While swimming is not allowed, visitors can rent a boat to leisurely explore the lake’s serene beauty.
If you have some extra time on your hands, consider taking a short drive out of the city to visit the Samboja Lestari Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, located in Kutai Kartanegara District.
While there, you can enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the center and even contribute to the cause by donating or purchasing merchandise to support the center’s important work.
If you have a full day of free time, don’t miss the chance to visit Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), Indonesia’s new capital, currently in the final stages of development. The trip from Balikpapan takes about 3 hours, so it’s best to set out early in the morning.
There are several attractions around the IKN that are worth visiting. The highlight is the iconic IKN zero point, where you can also catch a distant view of the Garuda Palace.
Along the way, you’ll find various tourist spots, including Bukit Bangkirai, the Mangrove Forest and Mentawir Tourism Village, Bukit Soeharto Forest Park, and more.
No visit to a new city is complete without trying the local cuisine, and Balikpapan is no exception. The city’s food scene is known for its seafood, with crab dishes being the highlight. Be sure to indulge in the famous crab dishes at popular spots like Kepiting Kenari Restaurant and Dandito Restaurant.
Another must-try dish is Mantau, a bun that looks like bakpao but has no filling. Mantau is typically served with savory sides like black pepper beef or crab, and it’s enjoyed much like a sandwich. For the best Mantau experience, visit places like Depot Simpang Empat, Mantau Blue Sky, or Pondok Mantau.
