Sure, climbing Mount Rinjani sounds like an epic adventure. The sweeping views from the summit, crisp mountain air, and raw connection with nature have long attracted seasoned hikers.
But make no mistake, Rinjani is no casual climb. It demands serious physical endurance, mental preparation, proper gear, and a good understanding of the terrain.
If you’re not quite ready to tackle the summit or just prefer your vacations a bit more relaxed, no worries. The foothills of Rinjani offer plenty of equally breathtaking spots, minus the heavy trek.
Sendang Gile is the first waterfall you’ll encounter when entering Mount Rinjani National Park from Senaru.
Water tumbles 30 meters down a cliff into a clear mountain stream below, just a 15-minute walk from the entrance. It’s an easy win for anyone craving nature without the workout.
From there, continue your trek for another 30–40 minutes to reach Tiu Kelep Waterfall, one of the most photogenic spots in the area.
Its cascading water curtain set against lush jungle makes it a favorite for nature lovers and Instagram explorers alike. Just a heads up, the trail can get slippery, so wear proper footwear.
This cultural village sits right along one of Rinjani’s main hiking routes. It’s home to the Sasak people, who still live in traditional thatched-roof houses and maintain age-old customs like hand-weaving.
It’s a must-visit if you’re curious about the cultural roots of Lombok’s highland communities.
Approaching from the Sembalun side? Don’t miss Selong Hill. This gentle slope offers a bird’s-eye view of rice fields laid out like a checkerboard, with Mount Rinjani rising in the background.
The short 10–15 minute hike is suitable for all ages, especially if you’re chasing that perfect sunrise or just want to relax in the breeze and snap a few great photos.
Stretching out along the foothills of Rinjani, the Sembalun Savanna is a wide-open field of green, especially vibrant during the rainy season from December to March.
Locals and visitors alike come here for picnics, photoshoots, and even pre-wedding sessions under the wide blue sky.
This viewpoint offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Sembalun with Rinjani towering in the backdrop. You’ll find basic amenities here like seating areas, selfie spots, and small food stalls, perfect for an afternoon coffee break while soaking up the mountain air.
Looking for a light hiking experience? Pergasingan Hill stands at about 1,700 meters above sea level and takes only 2–3 hours to summit.
The view from the top is nothing short of spectacular, with the village of Sembalun below and Rinjani looming in the distance. Many visitors also camp overnight to catch the sunrise and stargaze in the cool mountain air.
This historic village is believed to be the original settlement of the Sembalun people. Nestled in the valley between Selong and Pergasingan Hills, Beleq offers a peek into ancient customs, traditional homes, sacred sites, and local ceremonies that still thrive today.
See? You don’t have to reach the summit to enjoy everything Mount Rinjani has to offer. These foothill escapes serve up incredible views, fresh mountain air, and memorable experiences, all without the grueling trek.
