The online community recently buzzed with excitement over a unique cafe in Jakarta that employs elderly individuals—affectionately referred to as “oma.”
The inclusion of these delightful grandmothers at Uma Oma Cafe has garnered widespread positive reactions from social media users. Many visitors are drawn to the cafe specifically to experience the warmth and welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of a visit to their grandma’s house.
However, the cozy atmosphere isn’t the only highlight—the food and drinks served at Uma Oma Cafe are noteworthy as well! The cafe specializes in traditional Indonesian dishes, offering a nostalgic culinary experience for many. Intrigued to learn more about this delightful establishment? Read on to discover five fascinating facts about Uma Oma Cafe!
Some might initially think it's merely altruistic for the owner to employ elderly individuals. However, it's crucial to understand that this employment opportunity allows these grandmas to lead more fulfilling and colorful lives, not to mention earning some extra income.
During a visit by TRAC, three lively and engaging grandmothers were observed interacting with guests—greeting and welcoming everyone, and even opening doors for each visitor.
They were also seen tidying up tables on the ground floor. Rest assured, with an inclusive atmosphere, the rest of the ‘younger’ staff ensures that these grandmothers are well-supported and never burdened!
Uma Oma Cafe is conveniently situated in the classic and bustling Blok M shopping area, specifically at Jalan Melawai I No. 28, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
If you plan to visit and are driving, parking is available at either the Blok M Square or Pasaraya shopping centers. Alternatively, you can park near the Blok M terminal. For your convenience, Uma Oma Cafe opens its doors daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
In line with its classic and warm theme, Uma Oma Cafe boasts simple decor, featuring soothing shades of bluish-green and ivory (or off-white). Some areas of the cafe intentionally adorn an unfinished look to evoke the charm and nostalgia of a grandmother’s home, gently weathered by time.
The cafe is cozy with a two-story layout, so it’s not uncommon to see a line forming outside during peak hours. The ground floor, with limited seating, shares its space with an open kitchen where staff members prepare and serve food. If you're planning to stay awhile, consider sitting on the more spacious second floor.
The cafe offers a delightful array of dishes bursting with authentic Indonesian flavors. For those who enjoy soupy dishes, the warmly served Empal Gentong Oma is a must-try.
Other tantalizing options include Black Squid Rice, Melawai Lidah Rice, and Tegal Rice. For spice enthusiasts, Oma's Cobek Sambal Fried Chicken and Balinese Spicy Rice are sure to satisfy.
If you're looking for an affordable yet satisfying breakfast choice, Uma Oma Cafe also serves Nasi Lengko, a dish typical of Cirebon.
Planning for larger gatherings or events? Consider ordering their Nasi Tumpeng or Nasi Rantang. For visitors in the mood for a light snack, the cafe offers various treats like jalangkote and baked bolu tape.
Uma Oma Cafe doesn’t just excel at food; it also offers an extensive drink menu. For those who enjoy unique flavors, TRAC recommends trying the distinctive Iced Kopi Jeruk and the Iced Kopi Susu Sayang, especially if you're a fan of iced palm sugar milk coffee.
If coffee isn’t your preference, there are plenty of non-coffee options to enjoy while you spend time chatting and relaxing with the omas.
With drinks like Wedang Uwuh and Ginger Milk, your visit will feel even warmer and more comforting, while the Tamarind Ice promises to keep you refreshed throughout the day.
Besides Uma Oma Cafe, there are many other unique shops in Jakarta. Explore the capital's various tourist and culinary destinations with TRAC's Jakarta car rental service. You can choose whether you want to use a keyless car rental service or with a driver to make it more comfortable.
