Not only famous for its natural beauty, Indonesia is also known for its culinary richness. A number of cuisines made of meats and vegetables from Sabang to Merauke make a wealthy choice and it’s a huge chance that you may not encounter the same exact food during your trip. This time, TRAC is taking you on a journey to have a taste of goat-based cuisines from Indonesia, perfectly palatable during the “Hajj pilgrimage season”.
Its fame makes the food familiar to many ears, both locals and foreigners alike. Gulai can be made with different kinds of meat, including goat. The gravy at first glance is similar to a typical Indian curry gravy. You can easily find gulai at restaurants. Almost all regions in Indonesia have their own take on gulai, but the most common ones are goat Gulai from Ponorogo and Solo which are usually sold alongside satay or tongseng.
Korma means date fruit. However, there are no dates involved in the making of this food. In this context, Korma refers to the cooking styles in Northern India - Persia, which means cooking with little water. In the original dish, you can find milk added as a gravy, but the Aceh version replaces milk with coconut milk. Don’t worry about the distinctive, hard-to-remove goat aroma. You won’t smell because of the spices incorporated in the making of this dish. Spices like cardamom, cloves, and ginger play a huge role in keeping away the aroma. Oh, this dish is also a bone-in one, so you can eat it caveman style.
This special dish from Solo is a culinary legend. Passed from one generation to another, it has existed since the Dutch colonial era. The basic ingredients of tengkleng are goat bones along with the innards. You may find it weird eating bones, but the sensation when sipping the sauce gives a sensation that you won’t find elsewhere. Tengkleng has a distinctive savory taste, and the texture of the sauce is somewhat light, not as thick as curry.
Made from goat meat with innards, Rabeg is one of Banten’s signature dishes. Traditionally, Indonesian cuisine is served with coconut milk, but Rabeg is uniquely made without. At first glance, this dish looks similar to a stew.
You can find this sweet and savory dish typically at community or family gatherings in Banten. It is said that this dish is Banten Sultanate’s first ruler, Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin’s favorite dish.
Krengsengan is a typical Indonesian dish made from goat that’s cut into small pieces and combined with other spices such as garlic, coriander, and pepper. This dish, which is commonly known in East Java, has a dark brown sauce. Having a sweet and savory taste, goat krengsengan is a dish that is perfect for gatherings and family events. Best eaten with a plate of hot rice.
After the Eid al-Adha celebration, you may have some leftover goats in the freezer. You can try to create goat-based dishes from the recommendations above, especially if you’re looking for new menu ideas. Those menus are also perfect for family gatherings if you’re planning welcome homecoming relatives from the Hajj pilgrimage. The government has urged people to pick up Hajj returnees at the airport or at the dormitory, so to speak, throwing a private gathering would be the best choice.
To plan a simple but memorable event, you may want to leave the transportation arrangement to TRAC. With a variety of car and bus rental services, pick ups and drop offs could not be easier. You can even accommodate a family trip out of town, all with TRAC’s excellent service.
