Did you know that Jakarta’s cuisine is much more than just kerak telor? As a true melting pot, Jakarta has embraced a rich tapestry of cultural influences, especially when it comes to food.
The essence of Jakarta’s cuisine is deeply intertwined with the Betawi people, who have been the city’s heart and soul for generations. The Betawi have mastered the art of blending flavors from various regions, such as Sundanese, Chinese, and Arabic, creating unique culinary masterpieces that define Jakarta’s food scene.
In honor of Jakarta’s 497th anniversary, TRAC invites you on a culinary journey to explore the classic flavors of this vibrant metropolis. Let’s dive into an adventure and discover the delicious traditions of Jakarta.
Kerak Telor, or “egg crust,” is undeniably one of Jakarta’s most iconic dishes. This traditional delicacy is made from sticky rice, duck eggs, dried shrimp (ebi), and grated coconut, creating a savory pancake-like treat.
It’s a staple at many major festivals and events in the city, cherished for its rich flavor and the subtle sweetness of grated coconut.
While Kerak Telor isn’t something you’ll find every day, it’s not too hard to track down. You can often spot Kerak Telor vendors in popular tourist areas like Jakarta’s Old Town, around Fatahillah Park, and near the Monas (National Monument) area.
If Malaysia has Nasi Lemak, then Jakarta boasts Nasi Uduk. This savory rice dish is a staple in various corners of the city, especially in residential areas. Nasi Uduk is a popular breakfast choice for millions in Jakarta, but you can often find it being sold at night as well.
In the morning, Nasi Uduk is typically served with an assortment of stews, including tofu, tempeh, eggs, and the distinctive Betawi jengkol stew. By night, the menu expands to include a variety of side dishes such as fried chicken and offal.
One of the famous nasi uduk stalls in Jakarta is Nasi Uduk Kebon Kacang and Nasi Uduk Ayam Goreng Mat Lengket, which have been around since 1973 in the East Jakarta area.
Almost every region in Indonesia has its own version of soto, and Jakarta is no exception with its Soto Betawi.
This hearty soup features pieces of beef (sometimes including offal such as lungs and cow’s feet), tomatoes, potatoes, and chips, all drizzled with a savory and spiced coconut milk or milk broth.
One of Jakarta’s culinary legends is Soto H. Ma’ruf, a Soto Betawi specialist that has been around since 1940. If you’re curious to taste the delicious Soto H. Ma’ruf, you can visit their outlets in the Pramuka area, Menteng, Cikini, and Tebet.
Unlike some of the more easily found dishes, Gabus Pucung is harder to come by. Recently, it has become increasingly difficult to find this traditional Betawi culinary delight, especially in the heart of the city.
Gabus, a type of snakehead fish, is cooked in a black sauce made from kluwek or pucung fruit, resembling the look of Rawon. Its unique flavor offers a rare taste experience not commonly found in everyday menus.
Gabus Pucung is typically featured as a special item in Betawi restaurants that serve classic Betawi dishes. Some popular spots to savor this rare dish include the Setu Babakan Betawi Cultural Village, Pondok Gabus Pucung Jayakarta, and several locations in Bekasi, such as Pucung Gabus Bu Nana and Pondok Gabus Lukman.
Just hearing the word “asinan” is enough to make your mouth water. The combination of sweet, sour, and salty flavors creates a refreshing burst of taste in every bite.
Asinan Betawi is made up of various vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, and cucumber, along with peanuts and pieces of yellow tofu, all drizzled with a thin peanut sauce and a touch of melted palm sugar. Don’t forget to add noodle crackers for an extra crunch.
When it comes to Asinan Betawi, you can’t miss Asinan Kamboja, also known as Asinan Betawi H. Mansyur, located in the Rawamangun area.
This famous asinan shop has been around since the 1970s. Other legendary spots include Asinan H. Asmuni in Matraman, East Jakarta and Asinan Cisadane in Tangerang.
After exploring Jakarta’s culinary delights, don’t forget to indulge in the city’s unique drinks and desserts. Just as Jakarta’s food is synonymous with Kerak Telor, its signature drink is Bir Pletok. Despite its name, this “beer” is non-alcoholic.
Bir Pletok is crafted from an array of spices, including ginger, lemongrass, cloves, and cardamom, among others. The addition of secang wood gives it a distinctive reddish-brown color. With its rich blend of spices, Bir Pletok not only warms the body but is also believed to have health benefits.
To complete your culinary journey, make sure to try Selendang Mayang. This dessert is made from hunkwe flour, derived from mung bean starch, and is beautifully colored in white, red, and green to resemble a traditional dancer’s shawl, hence the name selendang mayang (“selendang” means “shawl”).
The processed hunkwe flour has a chewy texture with a slightly savory taste, which is enhanced by a splash of coconut milk. The dessert is sweetened with brown sugar syrup, creating an irresistible treat.
Finding Bir Pletok or Selendang Mayang can be a bit of a challenge. The best way to locate these treats is to visit iconic tourist destinations in Jakarta.
