It’s unfortunate but true that many drivers still violate traffic regulations. What’s worse, some of them are unaware that traffic signs exist. You’re not one of them, are you?

Even if they’re aware that the signs exist, it turns out that not all of them understand what they mean. Do you know the meaning of traffic signs and their main functions?

Simply put, traffic signs are road equipment in the form of symbols, letters, numbers, or sentences to guide road users.

They symbolizes warnings, prohibitions, orders, and instructions to create orderly, smooth, and safe traffic as regulated in the Regulation of Minister of Transportation No. 13 of 2014.

There are various forms of traffic signs with their respective uses or functions. But generally, there are 4 types of traffic signs: Warning, Prohibition, Order, and Instruction. How are they different? Let’s explore them below.

4 Types of Traffic Signs

Warning Sign

This sign serves to warn drivers of potential danger or risks. The characteristics of warning sign can be identified from the sign’s yellow base with black writing or symbol.

The most common example on the road is the sign showing a turning arrow, indicating a warning that the road ahead will turn.

Prohibition Sign

This sign is used to symbolize a prohibited action for drivers. It’s characterized by a white base color, bordered with full-circle red,and letters or numbers in black.

The exception is the no-entry sign with a full red base and a white strip symbol. In addition to the no-entry sign, the most common examples on the road are the no-stop (crossed S) and the no-parking (crossed P) signs.

Order Sign

Different from the previous two, this sign symbolizes an orderthat every road user must obey. This sign is usually placed near before the obligation point begins.

It’s characterized by a blue base with white-colored letters, numbers, or symbols. An example of this is a sign with a white arrow to the right or left, which means the driver must drive following the direction of the arrow.

Instruction Sign

Lastly, we have an instruction sign. This sign is used as instructions or information for road users. Its color usually varies depending on the type of information being conveyed.

Signs showing place/city name and information about the distance or directions to the location usually have a green base with white lettering.

Information for drivers related to traffic is usually written with a blue base and white letters or symbols as in command signs.

Another common example is a sign with a white U-turn arrow to indicate a location where drivers can make a U-turn.

Those are the information about the types of traffic signs commonly found on the road. Among the four, command and prohibition signs must be obeyed by road users because there are legal sanctions for violators.

Warning signs are not mandatory, but it’s advisable to understand and obey them for safety reasons. Instruction signs are information for drivers that can be useful depending on the driver’s situation.

As obedient drivers, we must always put safety first while driving. One of the ways is to maintain your car’s condition to reduce risks.
